I would suggest having a multi-meter and measuring which side is the + and which is the -. Make a note of this. You can also measure the voltage coming from the PC to ensure that you are using the 5V line. rather than electrical tape you could use shrink wrap to make it look a little cleaner and if you solder the wires together you should have more certainty of a quality connection.
