CPU selection so Sage doesn't crash
For many years I have put up with the SageTV problem where it occasionally crashes during fast forward/rewind if captions are enabled, requiring the computer to be reset in order to regain FF/RW functionality (Intel Kaby Lake with integrated graphics). I believe with an ancient AMD processor, it did not crash, but hung for 30 seconds or so every other time when FF/RW were pressed (going from memory, quite a number of years ago).
Now, it's time to upgrade my computers. Does anybody know if the crashing problem exists with the latest AMD products (e.g. Ryzen)? |

The symptoms described (especially the 30 second hang) sound like a classic case of Java Heap being too small.
With a few details about your system (which OS, how much system memory, Heap size, which version of Sage, which plugins are installed) someone might be able to offer some insight.

Windows 10 Pro 64, 16 GB, (how do I determine heap size?), Sage 7 and 9 (have tried various builds), no plugins.
Update- I have configured Sage to use VMR9 as the default video renderer, and things seemed to have stabilized. I will need to spend a few hours of testing to verify, but perhaps the latest Windows pushes have resolved the issue. The 30 second hang was resolved when I moved my systems from Athlon to Skulltrail and Skylake/Kaby Lake. That's when the crashes started. I thank you for your response! |

In the Sage UI: Setup -> System Information. Then scroll down a couple of screen-fulls, just above the System Configuration Details heading you should see "JVM Heap Size (Used/Total/Max)". That Max value should be somewhere around 1038 MB, which is the maximum possible value that can be set. If it's significantly smaller than that value, increase it. A forum search will provide the details of how to do so.
