Recording Quality Advice Needed

Hello,

I have a HD PVR 60 (uses HDMI to record). I am recording from a streaming device that is streaming at an unknown bitrate but I assume it is roughly 3GB/hr based on what Netflix streams at for 1080p.

I currently record at Best H.264 which is 5.9 GB/hr but should I be recording at Great H.264 which is 3.8GB/hr (closer to probably what the stream actually is)?

I'd like to maximize quality over space but can recording at a higher than streaming bitrate be beneficial?

I would try both and see if you can notice a difference. If the streaming device is using H.265 then you would need a higher bitrate with H.264 to capture all of the information as H.265 is more efficient.

That is an excellent point. The device I'm using is the latest Roku streaming stick (non 4k model) and I don't believe it supports h.265, I think only their 4k devices have h.265 support.

I'll do some recordings this weekend and see if I notice a difference.
