HD PVR 60 and 5.1 DD?

I have a HD PVR 60 set up and am curious about 5.1 audio and if anyone has it working.

The 60 doesn't have an optical out like the 1212 to 1500x series. I did read on an Amazon review that if you set the stream to M2TS then 5.1 works but I'm not sure how I could do that with SageTV and I haven't tested it out with the Hauppauge software (not installed).

Any advice? I'm really liking the HD PVR 60, it is small, uses less power, and works great, all it is lacking in 5.1 DD.

I would say to test that theory in the Hauppauge Capture software. I've come to the conclusion that any Hauppauge device that's going to capture 5.1 channel audio will do so through an optical port only.

I tested the HDPVR2 (with optical port) using just an HDMI cable, and I was never able to bring in 5.1 channel audio via HDMI.

I looked at getting one myself but then saw this link:
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-hom...-pvr-60-a.html

look at post#8 of 16 where someone emailed Hauppauge and they said it was 2 channel only.

I'm not now because I am still in the process of rearranging my systems but I got 5.1 sound on my original version colossus using HDMI straight from my DirecTV HR21 box.

That's what I thought...

It seems like every HDMI capture device I see is stereo only. Does anyone know why that is the case?

Our audio receivers can take an HDMI input and output 5.1 or 7.1 audio so it seems like a self imposed limitation. Could it be licensing requirements?

HDMI I think it has to be in Bitstream mode in order to capture AC3 2.0/5.1 signal as normally it in PCM mode so you need Audio AC-3 Hardware Encoder or something like DDL (Dolby Digital Live) to turn in to a AC3 Steam and it should be noted that Dolby Digital (AC3) last US Patent Has Expired on March, 20 2017 of last year
EAC-3, AC-4 nor TrueHD not cover and sure that MLP and DTS is also not cover

Most may not know this but MPEG-2 last US Patent Has Expired on February 13, 2018.

Interesting. Does that mean MPEG2 will now be royalty free for hardware decoders?

Edit: Nevermind, I looked it up myself. It appears that the answer is yes. Let's hope this gets us MPEG2 support in more new Android TV devices.

So is that why OTA recordings (MPEG2s for me) can be iffy in the mini client because there is no hardware based decoding support available?

Interesting, thanks for the info.

I guess I just now need to decide if stereo audio is acceptable for TV shows or not...

That's one reason why.
