"Basic" vs. "Extended Basic" broadcast TV?
Last night, after upgrading from 9.0.<something> to 9.1.<latest>, I switched over from SageTV EPG to Schedules Direct. All went pretty smoothly. However, I was stumped by one screen when configuring the data sources for local antenna/broadcast using SD:
The wizard demands that I select either Basic Service or Extended Basic Service Huh? What is it asking? Does it want to know how much I spent on my antenna? Whether I have a rotor and remote mounted LNA? |

This one baffled me too when it asked. So I selected Basic, noted the listing, then went back and selected Extended, noted the listing.
Didn't see a difference in the list of channels it had between the two. So I went back to "Basic" and did a channel scan, and saved. I use a HD OTA Card, so its kind of funny it would ask if I have an extended service or not.... it really depends on the antenna, as I can pick up some from the next city over (not great, but I can watch something).

I think the only difference is which channels are enabled by default.

I believe ENE answered this somewhere else and said they are the same. It is an option in the UI but SD does not offer differences so select either.

I had that same message pop up and the difference I found were:
Basic: Only provided EPG data for local broadcast channels, would be fine if you were using an TV antenna Extended Basic: Provided EPG data for local broadcast in addition to in the clear QAM signals that come down the cable line I have WOW (Wide Open West) and they still send me 100 channels in-the-clear so we don't have to rent their cable boxes as long as the TV has a digital tuner. If you want pay channels (HBO, etc) then you will need their box as they scramble these signals. But A&E, SciFi, etc are in the clear and they call this the Medium package.

I gotta think it's a fluke on SD's end, or your chose cable instead of broadcast. There is no tuner in the world (that I know of) that can tune broadcast and QAM at the same time, so any such lineup with both included sounds invalid to me. As described previous is what I noticed...looks odd, but doesn't matter.
P.S. nice to know a few cable co's still do it right out there. |
