Digital Satellite TV in the US?

Hey guys, I got a question about Satellite TV in the States. I am in Germany right now, visiting my family and all my sibblings have bought new digital satellite receivers because now they can receive digital TV via MPEG stream.

One of them even bought a Pinnacle digital video card and can now record TV shows straight from the satellite to his harddrive in unbelievable quality.

In the states I got DIRECTV. Do we have the option of the digital TV too or that's not yet possible in the states? (I'm not talking about HDTV)

Lets see what you guys know about this :-)
