No, they do NOT work with a serial port. They work with boxes that have an IR port (which are designed for a remote IR receiver to allow a box to be hidden in a cabinet).

Like Fuzzy said, they do not use Serial. What the cable does is allow you to basically remove the emitter and Receiver (Emitter plugged into USB-UIRT and Receiver plugged into STB) and for us old time techies, create a Null-Modem situation. This is supposed to remove interference into this link, and removes bleed-over signals to other devices. Gives you a direct, 1-1 hardwired link, w/o alignment issues.
