Same for me, I didn't see any options under the GUI PCI devices when I went to edit the VM. I then edited the XML manually and then it should up with a check mark next to my Firewire card.
However, I received an error trying to startup my VM which I attribute to not adding all the iommu group as well because my Firewire cards PCI port also includes USB ports which I didnt add. I removed the entry for now as I do not have time to start editing my VM files. But at least I think I know how to proceed when I need to.

It looks like I am SOL unless I upgrade (or downgrade) my CPU. I have an i5-2500K which doesn't support IOMMU/Vt-d, but the i5-2500 does.

That is part of the problem, my system information shows IOMMU: Enabled

Yep. That sounds like the cheapest route for you. As long as your MB supports it as well.
