New Android based 4K streamer $138.88

I saw this box demoed at a friend's house last Saturday. I was very impressed with video quality (he did not have 4K TV) and with the speed. Being Android based, it had many applications and we didn't have much time, so I don't know what apps he was running, although I know Kodi was one of them.

He showed real time streams of TV shows all over the world. He is from Taiwan and bought the box in order to watch shows from there. The box switched from one stream to another (Taiwan to Shanghai) faster than my HD-300 can switch recorded content.

At this price I think it's worth a gamble that the Android mini-client might work on it as an extender. Anyone else seen it?

Can't say for sure, but it sounds a lot like it falls under this umbrella:

Sort of... except in this case you are implicitly assuming it is using Kodi, since on their site, they are not referencing kodi at all. So it "could" be a box running kodi, but they don't tell you that.

I think stanger89 is right. It smelled like pirate torrents to me, but I didn't see how it could be so fast switching streams if they were torrent based. I remember seeing Kodi in the UI, but I've never otherwise seen Kodi and had no idea.

Thanks. Maybe I'll stick with something a little better known.

I'm always a little skeptical when I hear "android box", mostly just because anyone can make them, but it seems 99% of them are all from unknown (Chinese) brands. Outside of nVidia (Shield) and Google (Nexus Player), I'm not really aware of any android boxes (Not counting the Amazon Fires since they have their own take on Android).

I think some of those android boxes are running the phone OS, not Android TV. It's just kind of the wild west. I ran into the same thing looking for Android based car head units, they're basically all from China and they run terribly out of date versions of Android.

As for Kodi, I quite like it, I'd just be weary of anything that ships with it, and when it comes to streaming boxes, remember the old adage: "If it's sounds too good to be true it probably is."

I searched for quite a while to find an alternative to cable, and basically if it's not well known or from a well known company, it's probably based on pirated content.
