extenders, PS, client unable to connect

I'm getting the message "The SageTV Placeshifter (and client and extender) is unable to connect to the specified SageTV Media Center Server. Please make sure that the Placeshifter is configured on your SageTV media Center and that port forwarding is properly configured for your network. This can be done by going through the Configuration Wizard on the SageTV media Center and testing the Placeshifter connection."

Of course, to my knowledge, nothing has changed on my router. I can see the headless server and watch video using RealVNC viewer. i can see the server on my DHCP table. I can ping the router from the sagetv server using realvnc.

The only thing that happened prior to this is MS forced me to reboot the sagetv server to install win8.1 updates. not sure if this may have changed a setting on the sagetv server resulting in the extenders, ps, and client not to be able to connect.

any thoughts?

somehow the windows firewall got turned on, probably as s result of the forced upgrades. I turned it off and all's well now.
