HD-PVR Died - what is best replacement?

My original HD-PVR (49001 LF Rev E1) has suddenly died. (Blue LED comes on dim but nothing else). Power supply is good.

So what should I select as a replacement?

Do the new HD-PVR2's work OK with SageTV?

I see various varieties:
  1. Hauppauge - HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition High Definition Game Capture Device
  2. Hauppauge 1512 HD-PVR 2 High Definition Personal Video Recorder with Digital Audio (SPDIF) and IR Blaster Technology
  3. HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition High Definition Game Capture Device with Digital Audio

What are the relevant differences with respect to SageTV? Digital audio is a must since I used the optical SPDIF on the original HD-PVR. I don't need IR since I use the USB-UIRT for the blaster, and the Sage HD-300 for playback.

Just my personal opinion here, but another HD-PVR 1212 would be my first choice.

bought one on Craigslist for $40 a year ago just for that reason. They're super-cheap, since gamers use them, and seem to know nothing of Sage, which makes them a buy on the used market.

Not a bad idea. I should pick up a spare too. I bought my mine later in the life cycle so it works well, but I recall reading something on this forum about the earlier ones overheating.

Is there a specific revision I should be looking for?

What everyone else said. Get a 1212. The newer models (e.g., 1512) do not yet work properly in Sage. There are sound issues and other quirks.

Right...but there is no revisions of the 1212?

I don't really remember which revisions are which, but you can probably search around the forum for that. I believe that overheating potentially could be an issue for any version, just like any electronics. To be safe, I popped the cover off of both of mine and have a small usb-powered fan pointing at them and my Directv receivers. Along with weekly reboots of all my equipment, that combo has literally eliminated all issues. IMO, the bigger issue for all revisions was the power supply dying slowly and prematurely.

OK I found this: http://matthewdippel.blogspot.com/20...-error-in.html

And I noticed mine was an "F2", which is even newer. I don't have any problems with it.

I think the early versions didn't have fans but the later revisions included a small fan.

Thanks for your suggestions. I ordered a new 1212 and received it today.

Unfortunately when I connect it, the SageTV server computer is reporting USB Error 43 "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems"

It enumerated as an Unknown Device. I uninstalled it and reinstalled, but got the same error. I tried a different port on the computer and got the same error.
Rebooted, same result. Power cycled HD-PVR, same result.

Is there anything else I can try? I don't want to accuse the seller of sending me a defective unit until I'm sure its not some other issue.

Have you tried connecting it to a different computer? Like a notebook? Just to make sure it's is totally functional ...

I just bought a 1212 on eBay and initially had a similar problem. I had to change the USB cable and I switched the power supply with my other 1212 and then it started working.

Have you tried running the HWClear utility from Hauppauge after uninstalling (but before re-installing)? It is supposed to clear out additional stuff left behind after uninstalling.

If your HDPVR dies...it's pretty much always the power supply. I've been through about 8 power supplies on mine. I've even had weirdness where it stops working...I leave the power supply unplugged for a few weeks..and then it starts working again. I've also found that testing the power supply with a voltmeter is not a good indicator that the power supply for them is still good.

And you might even want to make your own power supply by cutting the barrel connector off of a bad supply and wiring it to a molex connector that comes right from your PC's power supply. Nowadays you generally don't need most of the old style molex connectors as they aren't used for SATA hard drives.

The one and only time the power supply on my HD-PVR died I ordered a replacement from Digi-Key. It's been running without issue for several years.

Would you be willing to look at the power supply from Digi-Key and getting the model # off of it, if you can?

Sorry, hadn't had time the last couple of evenings. Been very busy. I'll try and take a look this evening.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

The first HD-PVR has a consistent Error 43, even when connected to a computer that has never seen an HD-PVR before. I'm going to return it.

I ordered another HD-PVR, and I have it now. It is correctly recognized on USB and recognized by SageTV as an input device. However, it doesn't provide any video. Recording or previewing a channel results in black screen and "no signal".

The only difference is my original HD-PVR was Rev E1, and this new one is Rev F1.

Is there any difference in F1 that would keep it from being "plug and play" as a replacement for E1? Somebody said F1 was just adding a fan - nothing else?

Are there any firmware updates for the HD-PVR that might be out of sync?
Are there any settings in sage.properties that need to be customized?
I have HD-PVR Driver 1.5.7.0, which has always worked fine. Does Rev F1 require a different driver?

Tim, have you tried connected both units [one at a time] to a different computer yet as jchiso mentioned, with the latest software available directly from Hauppauge?
