Windows 10 technical Preview build 9926 breaks sage tv

I realize there is only the slimmest chance that someone can help me, but I'm hopeful.

I installed the Windows 10 technical Preview build 9879, and SageTV was working wonderfully. Then the system updated itself to a new build (9926) and it broke.
  • When I try to start the service with SageTVServiceControl, after 30 seconds it times out, giving this error in the Event Log:
    Code:
A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the SageTV service to connect.
I have seen other posts regarding that error here, but nothing that helped this problem.

  • When I try to launch SageTV by double-clicking its program icon, I can see SageTV under the Details tab of the Windows Task Manager, but no other sign that SageTV has launched is visible.
Apparently, something in the new build stops this from working. Does anyone here have an idea of how I might troubleshoot, even if it doesn't directly relate to the Windows 10 Preview?

(I can roll back to the earlier build, but that is not so desirable. I hope to find a fix for this before doing so.

Many thanks!

Steve

After reading the original post I tried installing SageTV Client on my Windows 10 test VM. At first I was not successful. I had installed the latest Java 8. SageTV did not recognize that Java was installed. Then I installed Java 7 and it still didn't work. I ended up having to drop all the way back to Java 6 for SageTV to be able to start.

It's strange because I only have Java 8 running on my Windows 8.1 machine but SageTV Client runs fine there. Not sure why there would be a difference.

I don't have anything else that uses Java. I can check it out if you post a link to something I can test it with.

The question is, are you running build 9926 on your VM?

Thanks. So it is at least possible that it will work.

Maybe linking the issue with the Windows Preview update is a red herring.

What else could cause the symptoms I reported in the OP?

Hmph...

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling java 6 on Win 10, and I get the same result- no Sage startup. With Java uninstalled I get the same result though.

?

Edit- I then installed Java 7 runtime. I was able to launch a java app ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/pavinweather/ ).

Later Java builds have Security turned up. Check those settings, i.e. Turn security off and see if it works

What security settings did you change to get the new version of Java to work? I haven't had any luck getting it to run on a clean Windows 10 install with the latest version of Java.

Edit: Never mind. I was getting the "could not find jvm.dll" error, but it turns out the solution was to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable runtime files from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5555.

I just updated my dad's recorder, and everything is fine until I try and run the client on that machine. I know get an error:

"---------------------------
Java Missing
---------------------------
Could not create JVM.
Please reinstall Java Runtime Environment 1.4
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Service is running just fine, but client has issues. Java is running, and C++ Redist package is installed. (I did notice an update to it install) Note, Client isn't NEEDED, but it's nice to have. Suggestions?

See this thread. Make sure the 32 bit package is downloaded and installed.

They were, but I shut everything (SageTV) down, uninstalled the Redistributable, reinstalled, patched, reset, and everything is running fine now. Must have had a locked file that didn't patch or something.
