Broadcast TV Volume
Is it just me or has the overall volume on broadcast tv been going down since the FCC introduced its rules regarding commercial volume? It seems like we are having to turn the volume up further and further to reach levels where we can comfortably hear the vocal track on our shows.
If they are indeed turning the volume down this means that it forces people to turn their volumes up. This means that the same audio will have a larger impact since the amp is being driven harder. Kind of the same as dynamic range compression but at a lower volume than is used for music. Maybe we are just going deaf but I've been noticing this for a while.

I noticed this on one of my channels myself. The stations are just turning down the volume so that the commercials are not too loud rather than normalizing the volume. That same station that was doing this has finally gotten some software in to normalize the volume better. Either that or they finally got their advertisers to reduce the volume on the ads. Because I don't notice it as much as I did a few months ago.

I've noticed that the actual programs seem quieter and that we're having to turn the volume up just to be able to hear it.

I'm glad you mentioned this because I was beginning to think my hearing was getting worse. When I bought my latest receiver a few years ago, I set it to always turn on to a specific volume, yet I've been having to turn it up louder than that for some time now. I even raised the volume on the center channel above what the automatic settings were adjusted to with the receiver's mic. Maybe it's not just me!

It's the same here. I used to watch everything on volume setting 40. Now some networks I have to raise it to 50 and sometimes 60. I was wondering what was going on. Guess we all could be just getting older and a little bit of hard of hearing..

I too have been noticing the volume had decreased. Thought it was a codec issue or some such, but couldn't find a solution and hadn't changed anything.
I'm not totally convinced there isn't an encoding counterpart as I have encountered commercials that jump in volume and seem to be at the volume level I expect from the program content. I'm waiting for it to bother me enough to start debugging. |

What's to debug when it's also live tv right from the cable box?

You are not getting deaf...
What you are experiencing is the effect of THIS which is now a legal requirement in US since 2013, but obviously not all operator have upgraded their systems and purchased the equipment as yet.
I used to work there for the last 10 years and I've added that functionality to one the product I was working on. Eddy
