How to for my guests
Wife just informed me family is visiting while I am gone in a few days. Has anyone ever put together a quick how-to for people to browse recordings, the guide, videos, etc. Why NOT to just channel surf etc. Looking for something but initial searches did not reveal anything. Any pointers to the right direction so I can avoid writing my own would be helpful. Thanks in advance

Go to detailed setup, then permissions. From there you can then create a new profile that controls things like the ability to set items as watched, delete, modify favorites, watch live TV, etc.
After you create the profile you need to enable it on each extender/client. You can also set a password to prevent changing the profile.

I've tried two different routes; the one you're asking about and simply having another STB from the cable co available for guests to use. The latter won out hands down. The mindset of a non-SageTV user really isn't conducive to them learning the system without hand-holding or at least watching someone use the system before they attempt it. I received at least 5 phone calls over a single weekend because something "wasn't right" and they couldn't figure out what to do. After the final phone call, they gave up on watching TV and stopped calling or trying.
Oh, I did use one other tactic which worked even better than the separate STB: "Sorry, the cable's out. Internet works, though." Also, if you don't do as will suggests, you will almost certainly have missed/deleted recordings.

Also, if you do go the Sage route then you might want to install ADM (Another Dynamic Menu) plugin so you can make the interface dead simple. With that, you can remove everything that isn't browsing recordings or watching live TV.

Thanks gang. I guess I just take it for granted how easy sage has been for me over the years. I think the visitors who have at least 1 technical person within the party will grasp the basic concepts. But I do like the idea of saying "the cables out" ;-)
