Thanks for this plugin Eddy.

I'm like you I shut my server down every night.

Will test at the week end.

Thanks

I suppose this is only somewhat related - but what is the reason for shutting the server down at night?

Do you sleep with the lights on?

As you said, switching off or not the server at night is not the point because this approach helps to overcome the consequence of restarting the SageTV server which happens every time you need to install/upgrade a plugin as well.

I was questioning turning it off vice simply putting it to sleep. Sleep would not change any program state, so the tuner configuration would remain after waking. That, and MOST plugin upgrades do not require restarting the server.

I'm not trying to say the plugin isn't needed, if your tuners are such that they are affected by this bug - but it would be a far less of an issue if you weren't forcing yourself into this situation once a day.

It really depends on your motherboard whether it does support the right "sleep" state or not, most server grade motherboards like mine (Tyan) or Supermicro doesn't support the S2/S3 sleep state, but mostly support the hibernate state. I choose server grade motherboard for generally better components used and reliability as they are designed to run 24/7 (hence they not support sleep state as it will make no sense), but I choose to switch it off during the night for hundred of reasons.

Also, it all depends from the tuner you've got, the TBS for instance doesn't like to be put on sleep, in fact, if the driver crashes in order to see the tuner appearing in the Windows Device Manager again, restarting the PC is not sufficient, you have to physically unplug the power for about 10 seconds, a bit of crappy design from TBS, but when they work they are very good.

I wonder if this might solve some of the errors I get. I'll be giving it a try and reporting back. I know I've had less errors since I took out my other tbs card.

A good way to know (without this plugin) is to use the TBS by starting four recording each separated by some minutes from the other and wait, after exactly 1 minute the tuners will start to fail one by one giving the yellow icon. I said 1 minute because is the default timeout SageTV uses to restart tuning the same channel after a tuner stops producing data.

Update

I mentioned this on different threads already, but thought to put it in the announcement thread of this plugin because particularly relevant.

If you're using this plugin please have a read HERE

Thanks
Eddy
