Java Heap error messages

I've been getting these for quite awhile now. I have to delete them daily and there are often multiple instances of the errors daily.

Quote:
Warning - General System Message
Java Heap has exceeded warning level
I just checked the info screen and saw this

Quote:
416MB/1038MB/1038MB
My server is running Java 6_38. I run the default SageTV UI and only a handful of plug-ins including commercial detector UI.

Any way to get Java to not use as much memory so that I won't get these Java Heap error messages?

That notification message is caused by the java heap memory monitor plugin. You can disable the message under detailed settings.

As for increasing your heap size you can find instructions on the forum; it involves a simple registry edit. Also, service restarts will lower your heap usage.

thx Will but last year I increased the max to 1024MB. I was advised (on this board) not to go any higher.

That's what's so perplexing...I'm at the max and I only run a few plug-ins with the base UI.

You run extenders and Place Shifter that uses up the Server Java Heap. SageTVClients use there own Java Heap.

How many clients/placeshifters/extenders do you run simultaneously? I run into problems when I have more than 3-4 operating and it looks like it doesn't always clean up properly when you stop using an extender.

~90% of my family's sagetv use comes - for the past several months anyway - is through an HD200. However, occasionally we use two MVPs in bedrooms and / or a placeshifter on a laptop in the kitchen or on my personal Win7 machine. I can't think of an instance where they're all in use. Usually an MVP or a PS session going on while the HD200 is running.

I'm not currently using the client right now...just doesn't work as well as the HDx00 extenders and couldn't get the MCE remote to ff and rw like the HDx00 remotes do. (probably need to spend some more time experimenting with and programming EG though).

This morning at 9:19a, when only my kids had watched sagetv via the HD200, I had 4x of these messages. No MVP or PS sessions had been started this early.

Perhaps the occasional use of placeshifter and MVPs are to blame but man, that's a bummer if that's the case. I use the UI pretty much out of the box.

So then do those who use Diamond, Phoenix, and Gemstone also get these java heap messages? There are many on this board who - I believe - use more memory intensive skins and plug-ins than I do. Do they also have to live with these java heap messages?

Perhaps my older Java 6_38 version is to blame?

thank you much for your replies!! I really appreciate the fact that there are experts still looking at this forum

These are the major plugins I have Installed on my Server and I almost never go above 600mb Heap..I am also on Java 7 latest release.. I stopped using fanart displaying Skins or themes but still use BMT. On my HD300 extender I do not use any Themes except MBDiamond with Blue two green and the CVF for videos.

I did experiment for the longest with Gemstone and Phoenix on my clients... They look great but I prefer responsiveness over eye candy so I stopped using them. I plan on sticking to the bare minimum because I fear that any day now the developers will move onto greener pastures. SO I am more or less satisfied with what I have installed now and have backed up all my clients and server Sage Installations. The only updates I will be doing are to my Installed plugins... Java and windows updates.

So do you think Java 7 is what allows you to run with only 600mb with all your plug ins?

I've had an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' strategy with my SageTV server. However, if Java 6 is what's causing this problem then I'll update it.

Thoughts?

I cannot really say if that is it .... I am from the school if it ain"t broke fix it till you break it. I always keep all my systems up to date.... but that is my preference.

I followed your 1/24/2013 java update instructions from here:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...highlight=java

All went well. No troubles with SageTV so far. And no memory errors yet either. In fact, the java heap monitor plug in shows extremely low java memory usage.

Thx!
