If I killed the automatic startup of the UI, recordings that were in progress during a crash or reboot would still continue as long as the service auto-starts, correct? I didn't realize that the UI firing up would delay recordings from resuming, which is apparently the case....

It doesn't really, the service controls the recording and doesn't care if the UI is there or not. Now the UI could slow it down slightly by consuming some resources, but if you watch, you'll find the UI basically has to wait for the service to get going before it can start.

how can you monitor the 'service' controls starting up, with regards to how long it takes? It's easy to see how long the UI takes, as the icon pops up. How so with the Sage Service?

Well if you have placeshifter and you have that turned on in SageTV then you could see how long it takes for it to be listed in Placeshifter. But that is a little crude. Someone else will have a better way I would expect.

Most of what the splash screen for the UI/Client shows in the progress area is the service/backend.
