The diskspace bar is a 'hidden unsupported extra' that needs to get turned on with a special keypress combo. I believe the reasons they are hidden and unsupported, is that they were not developed by Frey Technologies (then SageTV, now Google). You can read about them here: Unofficial Secret Extra v7 UI Features

There are a LOT of options/plugins to sage. For some ideas, you can browse through Setup -> Plugins -> All Available Plugins. Commercial skipping is one of those plugins (actually, a few of them). The trick first is to run a program to analyze the recording to identify the start and stop of the commercial breaks, which will save it as a .EDL (Edit Decision List) file. Then, there is a Comskip Playback Plugin that will read that .EDL file, and skip ahead when it gets to one of those timestamps. There are two main programs out there to find the commercials. One, is Comskip, the other is ShowAnalyzer. google will help you find either.
