I know this thread is kind of old. Yesterday I realized how much more I like using Plex vs Placeshifter even though I have to manually skip ads.

It just kind of hit me yesterday when I went to watch something in Placeshifter after only having used Plex since sometime before the Olympics started. Placeshifter's video quality is just unwatchable to me now. My internet connection and computer are fast enough that I can pull 720p without any hiccups. Placeshifter is stuck at 720x480.

Not only that but Placeshifter, for whatever reason, has never been able to do colorspace conversion correctly. If you don't know what that means I'll briefly explain. You have standard RGB that defines black and white the minimum and maximum values (e.g. 0,0,0 and 255,255,255). Television video black is actually dark gray and video white light gray. For video to look correct on a computer RGB display the video colors must be modified to match straight RGB. If this conversion is not done you end up with a washed out image. On any computer I've ever run Placeshifter except maybe a Mac the video is all washed out. Plex does not suffer from this problem.

For these reasons I'll just suffer through ads or manually skip them. Placeshifter is just showing its age. The MPEG2 video that it is stuck using coupled with poor color quality is no longer acceptable.

Curious

If I am streaming from my plexus server locally, does it use any data or bandwidth from internet?

Reason I am asking cuz our ISP just got rid of unlimited data and now usage cap on their data.

Using Plex locally does not use internet.

I have to agree that Placeshifter always had issues - did they ever fix the problems streaming 1080i video?

If you're talking about H.264 1080i video from the HD-PVR, no. MPEG2 1080i video recorded from OTA or cable works fine.

I must be doing something wrong here....

Downloaded the Plex server and pointed the TV Show to the Recording folders but Plex is not detecting any of my recordings.

I am using Colossus at default settings. Any idea what I missed? Or do I have to convert all recording into different format?

Bill

you need to do some additional software / plugins installations to get sagetv and plex to play nicely together, see http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57842 for details.
