I need a new TV

There doesn't appear to be much hope it seems for me to ever get another HD300. What does anyone recommend for a new tv that may have app with any Sagetv potential other than dlna?

I would NOT get a smart TV, unless you just can't stand to have an external box. I'd wait for the just released Google TV boxes myself. After that, a Roku, and install the Plex server on your server.

Is there a reason you don't want to use DLNA?

Seems like most carry some sort of smart feature which I don't care much about or would ever use. DLNA is fine and will suffice for now. I use PlayOn. I wish they would release the remaining inventory of HD300's assuming they still have them collecting dust. My old MVP works but it's just choppy sometimes and doesn't handle watching live content very well.

  • You install the Plex Media Server
  • You can use the SageTV/BMT scanner plugin for Plex to include your recorded content in Plex's library
  • You install/use a Plex Client (available for PC, Mac, Roku, some LG TVs, iOS devices, etc) and access your SageTV content.
  • Add other media and plugins available for Plex

Enjoy fun and profit

I'm running Plex on the new Sony NSZ-GS7 (still can never remember that name without checking ) Google TV box. Works well, just have to playback recordings via DirectPlay so they won't transcode on the Plex server. I have the Plex server look for new recordings (from Sage) every 30 minutes.

Must say I'm not thrilled with the Plex interface so far, too may years on SageTV , but it does work. I can jump to Chrome from Plex to access the SageTV Web interface.

The new Vizio Google TV box will start to ship in a couple weeks for $100 less than the Sony (i.e. $99). Should have similar performance to the GS7 as I believe they are on the same Marvell chipset.

I suppose that depends on the client -- I know on the Roku, the Plex UI is a very Roku-like UI and that ain't exactly pretty / overly functional but it gets the job done.

But Plex is quite lovely on my PCs and iPad -- and I love the sorting features: recently added, recently released, unwatched, by collection, by genre, year, decade, directory, starring actor, country, etc.

For PQ I would recommend panny plasmas VT, GT, or ST 2012 models. The VT is simple one of the best TVs ever made. The app screen selection is sluggish though and the glare is noticable in a sun filled room.

Whatever your selection, the first thing I would do would be to put it in cinema mode til run a calibration disk though it. Vivid mode will only decrease the longevity of the tv, give inaccurate colors, and use more power then should be.

It can be but doesn't have to be. (My PMS will eventually be on my husband's new monster i7 box and not on the HTPC where SageTV is installed)

I would agree with the sentiment that it is not worth paying much, if any, premium for a Smart TV. You are likely going to own your TV for a decade or so and the "smart" functionality will very likely be obsolete in a couple of years or so. Buy a good quality TV today and get something like a Roku or AppleTV that are $100 or less and that you can upgrade in a couple of years.

Indeed it is, but I am biased ;-)

It's really pretty straight forward... Just ask any questions over in the Plex thread and me, Brian, and darci will give u all the help you need to get up and running.
