SageTVService.exe Memory Rising...
Running SageTV for YEARS... You people have ALWAYS fixed any issues I have had... All good here for a LONG time... but... in the past 4 months here is my NEW issue... SageTVService.exe memory usage just keeps going up and up... Starts at apx 55,040K after boot server... then goes up and up to lets say 484,676K... then up to 600,000K... then more & more... etc... etc... then server freezes up... and needs to reimage and start over... This is all something new... Never happened before... Running SageTV V7.1.9 (Latest)... Java V6.31... but does the same with Java V7.05... 4 GB Ram in Server... NO SageTV addin's used at all... Takes a day or two for memory usage to rise from 55,000K to over 600,000K... Only fix I know is to reboot server or restart SageTV each day to release the memory... Running SageTV in service mode... Worked OK for over a year and NEVER touched it and now not so nice... NOTHING has changed on server... Keep SageTV off and server is 100% OK... It's ALL something to do with SageTV... and it is a NEW isssue for me... Can you help???... I sincerely appreciate your efforts...

Have you run all the Sage updates to ensure you are running the very latest version... It needs to be run multiple times to get the latest.
Another suggestion is to enable the debug log option on the server and the take a look at those logs to see if there is a hint to the issue. ... Have you added any placeshifter or extender clients? As they can eat up memory. k |

Mine does a similar thing, it slowly creeps up.
I notice a jump every time an extender is switched on, and it goes up between 20 and 40Mb each time. I have a script that checks the services memory usage every 15 mins and writes it to a file so I can keep an eye on it. Even when its high the HD300's work perfectly. The HD200 is a little sluggish, thats when I know its getting high and then I restart the service. It was the same with java 6 and 7. At some point I plan on doing a clean install with no plugins and then adding maybe 1 every couple of days and seeing how it goes, but I can usually go a week before each restart. |

Do you do any encoding with the SageTV transcoder? I've noticed memory climbs like you but only on one of my servers. I do encoding on that server.

yep, noticed this too. Like once a week now for the past month I've had warnings that the Java heap has hit the ceiling. That's around 1100 MB for me. I turned off Diamond and Phoenix FanArt UI plug-ins a while ago thinking that might have something to do with it but it's still occurring. Most viewing around here is done via an HD300.
What's odd is it maxes out outside of viewing periods. Could be SJQ running MediaShrink transcodes for me. |

I have NO Plugins... NO Customizations... NO Decoding... NOTHING... All SageTV is up to date... NO Clients... NO Placesetters... NOTHING... I have discovered that after I boot the server I am at the 50,000K level... THEN it is using of the SD200's or SD300's that make the memory usage climb... I would say about 80,000K per extender usage cycle... that is viewing stuff... etc... so the more you cycle the SD200 or SD300 the more it climbs... it is just that simple for me... and at one time it NEVER did that... I have no idea what to do about it... but I am not as happy as I once was... Perhaps I will schedule an auto server reboot every day at 3AM and let that be the fix... but it bugs me not to SOLVE the issue... So it is...

I think this is more of a java issue than sage. Remember back when Java begged you to automatically update itself without your permission. I eventually let it do that and ever since I have had java heap issues.

EDIT: Another solution is to ask support what is the official recommended Java version for the last SageTV release and stick with it forever.

Why don't you guys shut down Sagetv fully uninstall Java fully ... delete the Java folder if it still exists .... reinstall Java ... Start Sagetv.

Are you telling that you had the very same issue and you fixed that by following this procedure?

I am saying that I never had that problem (on Java 6 and now Java 7) ... but I have recommended others that had this problem to do this... and it has helped most Java problems occur when Java is updated and Sage is running.

I went from java 6u30 to 6u25 - and seem to see the heap rising slower than it was on 30. Too early to tell, but I used 6u25 for a long long time without noticing any issues...

OK, after my SageTVService reaching the staggering 1.2Gb after just watching a BR on the HD300 last night, I took the executive decision to change the Java version on my server, despite the Olympics
My initial intention was to downgrade to 1.6.10-b33 as the original certified version distributed by SageTV, but after the Oracle website asked me to register to their website in order to get such an old release and not willing to do that, I opted for a clean install of the 1.6.33-b5, which is the latests official Java 6 and this time no question asked! Well, so far so good, the SageTVService is about 280Mb idle (still high in my opinion), but very consistent since last night...will see how it goes. Eddy

Following your procedure I did not have to re-install any plugins etc they worked just fine.,,, just needed to update the STV... a few times. I then went to control panel and prevented Java from autoupdate. I wont be fooling around with Java anymore at least on the server. Thanks

You might also want to set the JRE Auto-Download property to Never Auto-Download. (Java Control Panel->Advanced Tab)

I start to believe that there are too many people being affected by this recently and the Java version is just a red herring...
