ESC key
Hi;
I'm thinking of jumping ship from my paid BTV software to the new Sage 2.0. So far the features seem well ahead of the competition. Well done! I've figured out most of the program, and using the new customized skins I've gotten most of the usability issues out of the way, but there's still one that sticks out and is very frustrating. I would think that someone more experienced with this program can offer a solution. The problem is the (IMHO) non-standard use of the ESC key. (And Back/Exit key on the Hauppauge remote) I want it to "Escape" meaning go up one level from any menu, and if there's no menu, to exit out of the currently playing video or LiveTV, and if that's not happening, to offer to sleep or exit the program. I'm sure the programmers had a good reason for making it work the way they did, but since most software uses the ESC key to "Escape" from the current mode, it's very non-intuitive to work with the program as it is. Don't get me started on the WAF!! I've looked at setup>detailed setup>commands screen, but I can't see how to fix it from there. I know this program has the capabilities of being customized significantly, so I know it must be possible. So, how would I go about changing it's function to operate as I've suggested? -Andy. |

This won't make it work exactly like you want, but you can simply assign ESC to the Back command to have it go to the previous screen you were on. Similarly, you can change the functionality of any of the buttons on the Hauppauge remote by either changing irremote.ini (in your Windows directory) or changing the command the button's keystroke corresponds to iside SageTV.
Edit: Back will keep going to the previous menu, but won't offer to exit/sleep once you get to the main menu. - Andy

Thanks very much!
It works ok, but when I'm in live TV, pressing ESC brings up a menu. Is there a way to attach ESC to exiting out of live tv (equivalent to "stop") Also, when I'm in a menu and watching live Tv, pressing ESC should close that menu, which it doesn't if it's the main menu. Any way to change that? It's ok if continuously pressing ESC doesn't exit out of the program, but the above 2 items I would like to do if possible. -Andy. |

Anyway... did you already assign Esc to some other function than "Options"? If so, I'm not sure why it would continue to bring up that menu during playback. Quote:

If you have assigned it to Back, it should be 'backing' out of the playback screen instead of popping up the menu. Edit: I just tried it & that's what it did. - Andy

Thanks again for your help.
It's no use, I'm afraid. ESC will simply not work the way it does in EVERY other program I've ever used. Attaching it to "Back" is not really correct. It needs to "Escape" (like the key says) from whatever mode you're in; Menu, Playback, whatever. It makes no sense the way they've done it! I sure hope this is something that can be fixed with Studio, as it's complete illogical the way it works now (IMHO). I can't be the only person who feels this way! Sorry, I'm a little frustrated. I just want it to work intuitively. -Andy. |

you can assign multiple commands to a button on the remote
but not to the keyboard |
