Local playback on WHS server?
I've been contemplating building a new client box for the family room, currently served by an HD300. This will allow me to repurpose the HD300 upstairs, and then move that HD100 elsewhere.
I do have one currently unused client license (I think!), but the unavailability of additional client licenses has got me to thinking about alternatives to a client PC. As it happens, my family room is atop my basement, and in principle I could move my server to a space in the basement directly under the family room TV. From there, I could just run an HDMI cable, an SPDIF for audio, and a USB extension cable for a USB-UIRT or a bluetooth dongle for interfacing with whatever control system I choose. My questions: Is this a viable setup? What am I overlooking? Does my server (E8400, 3g ram) have enough power to handle local playback as well as serving the other locations on my LAN? What video card should I get (right now, the server is headless)? Does WHS have the proper codecs for local playback? Your guidance and wisdom are appreciated, as always. |

WHS does not have the correct components installed to watch SageTV on it. You can start the GUI and browse the different menus, change settings, etc, but you cannot watch any videos on the machine.
I'm not sure what portion is missing to be honest. I use the GUI all the time to change settings, look for updates, etc. But I have never looked into trying to install the correct components to make playing videos play.

My reply was based on WHS1 as well.

WHS v1 does not have the direct X features required for sound. There have been some hacks and could probably be setup to run as client. Biggest problem with that is you are basically taking a server and turning it into PC to run as a server/client combo. Don't know if this is your production server but if it is you may not want to risk breaking the parts that work so well on WHS v1.
Good Luck Mike |
