Sage stutter on CPU spikes

Am getting stutters. In general my box idles along at 2-5 % cpu utilization, but will spike up to 70-90 every now and then causing momentary stutters. What is causing this? I could understand if I were pegging the proc, but these are just random spikes, the performance problem (stuttering) seems way out of proportion.

It does this during live, playback, and mp3 playback.

Thoughts?

TIA!

I would first try to quantify "how often" this spike is occuring...

If it is every x minutes or x seconds then that speaks to a process or service that is running on your machine in an automated fashion. I recall that Real Player doing this every 5 minutes - it was checking the Real Player service for content updates.... Uninstalling Real Player or unchecking this option took care of the problem.

If it seems like an intermittant thing and you are running XP or 2000 you can use the performance counters in the Performance Monitor to log when the CPU % goes above x percent. This will allow you to track the problem a little better and see if it is repeating every x minutes or seconds.

Fixed it. Bizarrely enough, it must have been some sort of magnetic interference. I had moved a speaker to get behind out TV, and once I moved the speaker back to it's original position (2-3 ft away from PVR), no more stutters.
