If SageTV dies one can move to MythTV today and get similar functionality. Even if Google does nothing there are alternatives. They will be better in some ways, worse in others. Or you can continue to use SageTV and build HTPC clients.
I use SageTV for the stuff it's good at (recording OTA ATSC TV) and I use a browser for streaming video; something that SageTV is pretty bad at. In fact, I'd say that these days streaming video is my primary source for content and SageTV is supplementary. If/when SageTV as a platform dies people will move on to another community (like Myth) and start contributing their talents there.
Over the past few years I've moved from BeyondTV --> WMC --> SageTV without major issues. I'd go back to WMC but one of my primary requirements is a software client.
In my view I'm being realistic and you're just being a pessimist.
