SageTV7 WHS not taking v6 license

I upgraded a SageTV6 WHS install to SageTV7 and got a trial expired/not licensed warning. Entering my SageTV6 key gives me:
The SageTV Server was not successfully licensed. Please check that the values entered in the 'Name' and 'Key' fields are correct and try again.
Little help on where I start from here?

Did you apply Jeff's special executables, as documented below?

I recall having a similar problem when I upgraded, too. I think what I did to fix it was using the command line interface to register sagetv, not the one found in start/programs/sagetv/register .

I know the major difference was I thought one asked for my name EXACTLY as I typed it when i registered version 6.

I am trying to figure out how I did that, exactly. It was several months ago, but I know the difference I found was that it had to ask me for my name. The one that didnt seem to work with my valid license just asked for the key.

Hope that helps set you in the right direction. Try the manual for the HD300 or whatever manual you have for the command line to register it.

I thought I did. Lemme try it again.

{Fire up Advanced Admin Console. Replace sage and sageservice EXEs with Jeff's replacements.}

Well, that seems to have done the trick. I remember swapping in the replacements before, but I must have done a clean install while sleepwalking or something. Thanks!

Or you had to restart the SageTV service. I fell for that one, too. Felt like an idiot not restarting the pc.... at least it was still plugged in when I did it....

Thank you for posting this. My server and another PC were stolen and I lost my v7 upgrade key. I only had my old v6 upgrade key and original key in my email. Thought I was hosed until seeing this and I am on my way back to setting up. Thank you again

SageTV upgrade free?

I read on a number of sites that a free upgrade was offered to 5 and 6 clients. I purchased 5 and upgraded to 6. Where can I get 7?
When will we find out what plans Google has.

KInda sad, great product.

i'm a 6.6 user, didn't have the opportunity to upgrade to v7. Can I use this update as well? I downloaded, tried replacing the .exe file, but it doesn't work.

You need to download the full 7.1.9 package from the sticky in the SageTV Software thread, install that (to do the full upgrade, then replace the .exe's with those in this thread.)

License Key Instead

I see the option of copying folders and stuff but understand from some that those options aren't working? Is it possible to get a v7 license key instead and do it that way?

Just do what fuzzy suggested that is the same as having a sagetv 7 license. No difference.

The latest development version can be downloaded from here and the licensed exe file has been authorized for release here. What am I missing?

Free would imply anyone can download it and use it at no cost. That is not the case. What IS free is an upgrade to v7 for licensed owners of v5 or v6. All the modified .exe files do is accept a v5 or v6 key, without requiring a v7 upgrade key to be entered.

I don't know. What I did was completely uninstall and remove all SageTV folders found on my computer. I then used a clean install of SageTV from here and the licensed exe file from here. I ran into no issues. I suspect, but am not certain, that a new user could do the same. The fact also remains that there is no place to buy SageTV anymore.

Your previous registration information was still on your system.. Uninstalling it does not clear that info. So, you still have your v6 registration entered, so installing the modified v7 picked that up, and said it was okay.

If you had done a fully clean install, you would have been asked to enter your key. It would have accepted a v5, v6, or a v7 key, but without one of those, it will run in 21-day trial mode, and then quit.

Ah, ok. So it was still in the registry somewhere? If that is the case, how do I recover my v6 key?

You can't. it's not stored in a recoverable form. The way to recover it is to contact SageTV Support, and they can re-send it to you.
