2. Now that "google fiber" has been announced, can we sage users piggy back on the google fiber epg? If not, which "epg alternative" is considered the most popular/strongest supported?

3. When extenders die, do we just throw them out? Is there some sort of schematic or place we can send the extenders to so they can get "fixed"?

4. Can I run a strand of fiber from NJ all the way to Kansas City to get google fiber at my home?
I know of no reason the forums or the EPG would go away at the end of this year or the next even. My educated guess is both will be around for a while into the future - well past the end of this year.

When extenders die.... you know, that's a good question. I'm not sure.
About that strand of fiber.... it will get to NJ, NY etc. Just don't know when.

3. I asked this of Jeff, about a year ago including asking him for the Comm protocol. Jeff replied to the question with a question and I never got an answer. So I just assumed the answer was no.

If you think about it, a schematic woul dbasicly be a blue print to make more extenders and they don't want that.

4. Sure, aim your cross bow in the general direction and hope it pegs a line

I believe Jeff answered this question, and said the forums and EPG would be around through the end of the year.

He didn't comment on extending or saying it would be past that time. I think it may have been earlier in this thread where he said this.

His comment said it would be around at least through the end of the year. If he were to drop the EPG service, we would be given plenty of lead time. There is not a reason to worry for now - beyond the end of this year.

I wonder how expensive it is to keep the EPG running. Is it just the cost of a schedules-direct subscription X sagetv-users?

There's about 300 people who replied to that head-count thread (man I hate that thread), times $25 equals about $7,500 per year..

Maybe we can all chip in and send Google a check on xmas so they spare us having to muck around with a new EPG?

I would expect it is more like a site license in that they don't have to give exact numbers just $xx,xxx dollars per year. What $xx,xxx amounts to would just be a guess. I suspect the usage is much higher than 300 people however.

Well, don't we struggle all with those ultimate questions? I for one am considering stuffing mine.

I asked the same question a year ago, i.e. what happens to the forums? that's a real concern. would we likely be able to get permission to port the forum elsewhere if the Google folks don't want to deal/pay for them? without these forums, SageTV would be a slog for a lot of users.

AFAIK google moved these forums to their servers. Someone should be able to confirm.

Dilbert

Today's Dilbert reminds me of SageTV http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/2012-08-15/

Hope it makes somebody laugh - instead of crying. I still love Sage, but I miss the periodic upgrades and excitement.

The Google acquisition - any news?

So, it's been more than a year now since Google aquired Sage. Any news? Will we be seeing some updates to SageTV? A new product from Google compatible with the old SageTV?

I've been Googling but all I can find are old news since last year when the acquisition took place.

Here's one hoping SageTV hasn't become an abandonware ...........

The short answer is no. The long answer involves interpreting oblique winks and vague words as only true believers can.
