BluRay Captions/subtitles

I've been reading about captions and subtitles in the forum for a few months now and I just don't seem to be able to get my head around what I'm doing wrong.

I was watching "The Tourist" on a Bluray rip'd with DVDFab on my HD100 and I was unable to see the CC/Subtitles at the start when the officers were speaking French (on the English version)

Why exactly is that? I suspect, from my reading that HD100 can't display cc on bluray, is that it or was it the DVDFab rip?

If I upgrade to an HD300, would that solve my issues? Would I then be able to see CC/Subtitles from a bluray ripped with DVDfab (using the main movie option, since I don't have and never will, I guess, blueray menus)

I apologize if this has been covered like 100 times, but I've read all 100 of them and I'm still not sure what exactly the issue is.

I haven't used an HD100 in quite a while, but did you turn the subs on? On a lot of BDs the subs have to be enabled manually.

I have actually done that. I was messing with a bluray and forgot to turn them back off and next time I watched TV they were up and running. CC does work on TV.

I guess from the lack of answers that this is as complex as I expected. I guess it would be easier if someone would verify that blueray rips from DVDFab have CC. I suspect they do, because I've seen them in the past on my PC. However, in this case, I was unable to bring them up on the PC. That doesn't mean they were not there, but I lack the software to watch them.

I don't think BDs have Closed Captions, they have Subtitles.

Good that helps. I turned on subtitles. Nothing. I selected sub titles and it showed 3 different English subtitles were available. However, none of them would display on the screen.

So, the lack of "Hey, here is how you fix it" answers lead me to DVDFab. The docs on DVDFab are the extra lite version, so it is difficult to get what I needed, but playing around with a BD and the settings, I found that subtitles are called subpicture and they can be turned on and off. So as far as I can tell, no way to turn them back on, on the fly.

So, not the HD100's fault, it is DVDFab. So no easy solutions here because its back to the "BD menu" issue. I could burn and ISO, but then without menus... still an issue.

Ok, I verified it with PowerDVD, there are no subtitles on the rip from DVDFab that can be played.

With DVDFab, either they are on when it is made or they are off.

I rip my blurays with clownbd+mkvmerge because I couldnt get dvdfab to do what I wanted it to do. I do successfully get subtitles in my blurays doing it this way.

Looks a bit more complicated than DVDfab's drop in the BD and press start, but it does seem to actually have documentation.

Thanks, I'll give it a test run and see if that works. DVDFab just isn't going it for me.

The default settings in DVDFab are removing the subtitles. Either change your defaults or set it on each BD rip.

My difficulties with dvdfab weren't necessarily with the subtitles. The biggest problem I had with dvdfab was that there is no way to say that you want the source audio as passthrough but then you also want the source audio as ac3 as well.

I'm messed with the settings and it seems to have two modes. Subtitles or no subtitles. It doesn't seem to be possible to make them optional.

When you go to the options screen in sage when watching a movie do you get the option to turn off subtitles if you set it to include the subtitles through dvdfab?

True, I get the option, and I see them listed, but I can not turn them off or on using the HD100. (Or with PowerDVD)

Hmm, I don't have a hd100 so I cant speak to any particular peculiarities of the device.
