Any way to limit number of favorite recordings?

I like the 'Favorites' recording option.

But for shows such as 'Extended Play' on TechTV that are marked as 'new' everytime it airs there are too many recordings. For instance it wanted to record it about 10 times this week alone...

It would be REALLY nice if (like in other PVRs) you could force it to only record X number of a shows.

For instance tell it, keep 5 of Extended Play maximum. And then just have it dump the oldest one as needed.

Can this be done? If not, it would be a great feature for v1.1...

Jason,

With your example re: "Extended Play", we are at the mercy of the data we receive from Zap2it. I noticed the same problem with some of the news programming.

We'll add your request to the list for new features and update everyone when it becomes available.

That brings up a good point Dan.

I also see it the other way too. The show The O'Reilly Factor is always listed as a "rerun". Therefore I never get any of those recordings. Some may say that's all the better for me, (not everyone likes O'Reilly ) but since I don't want to record them all, I don't get any.

What kind of feedback and response to you expect to get from Zap2it on errors like this, given that it is a pay service?

Of course, now that I really think about it, Sage's programing is powerful enough to overcome this, because I think it will only copy any one episode only once and not record it again as long as it's in the video directory. Is that true? Of course, I just looked and all the episode numbers are the same as well. I guess that idea won't work either.

Sounds good.

I understand about the listing data being out of your control. I think that is why other PVRs instituted that 'only record X number of shows max' - to help get around poor first run/rerun designation without filling the entire hard drive in two days (in certain circumstances).

Since you already have the 'show detection' in there for the favorites feature, it would seem to be fairly easy to add a 'limit' on them in a point release later.

Thanks for the response.

Jason

The solution I chose for this problem was Intelligent Recording. If you enable Intelligent Recording and don't mark something a favorite; but still watch it. It'll start recording it automatically for you.

When the profiler does automatic recordings there's an extensive set of algorithms it applies. There is an extensive portion related to how many instances of a given show should be kept; and it is self-adjusting based on how much you watch them.

For example; I have Intelligent Recording enabled (of course) and I love the Simpsons. I have the Simpsons marked as a First Run Favorite. So Sage always records the new Simpsons episodes. But I also like to watch the reruns on occassion; but if it recorded all of them that'd be about 3 a day and way more than I watch. Therefore I don't make Simpsons reruns a Favorite. But because I've watched Simpsons reruns before; Sage will record them for me automatically. It doesn't record all of them; but it records enough of them to make sure there's always a 'satisfying' amount of Simpsons on demand for me to view.

If you'd like more clarification; please let me know.

Thanks,

Interesting. I'll certainly try that!

Now if I can get it to stop rebooting my computer everytime I close the SageTV app, I'm going to buy it...

I've responded to that thread....I'm quite confident that it's the version of Java you're using. This is bug documented by Sun and one I've faithfully reproduced in the past.

Any word on whether or not the 'limit o X number of recordings' feature made it only a future release list or not?

Just curious, as it is a great feature I grew to love on the WinXP MCE.
