Removal of previous version; bug or feature

When I attempted to test SageTV 2.0 on my 1.4 client system, I encountered a nasty surprise. It removed my SageClient and SageRecorder. When I contacted Frey support they responded with:
Quote:
Yes that is fixed now. Meaning if you have SageTV Recorder 1.5 and you download a newer version of SageTV/Client it will not remove SageTV Recorder 1.5. Only a newer version of SageTV Recorder will remove the previous version. The next versions of SageTV will remove older SageTV/Client programs.
I fail to see any reason why untested software should remove tested and proven software. In my opinion this has got to be just plain wrong wrong. I did not even have SageTV 1.4 software on that computer. It removed 1.4 Client software, to install a test of Sage TV 2.0, which I consider different software.

I would like to get some opinions from others concerning this problem. If the SageTV 2.0 was usable this would have been a non-issue, however 2.0 is currently unusable for me and it looks like quite a few other people also have problems with it.

carlgar, to me, proper upgrade procedure includes the backup of the original software directory. That way, if the untested software is not to your liking, you can go back to what you had. This has always been what was recommended by Frey and others on this board.

falchulk, protection of the directory is not the issue. The few times that I tried the Beta I did backup my 1.4 Sage directory, because the beta was to be installed over the current version. I did install the trial version of SageTV 2.0 in its own directory to protect my current directories. The problem or issue that I am addressing is that Sage will not allow you to have 2 versions of their saftware on the same computer. This means everytime I want to try SageTV 2.0, I have to allow extra to reinstall and test my original software. This really limits my testing time. Instead of allowing only 5 mins. to get back to my original state, I now have to allow at least 15 mins to reinstall and check my 1.4 software. I would think Frey themselves would be the first to find problems with their current logic. Either they have 1.4 and 2.0 on different systems or they will stop any support for previous versions when a new version is released. I doubt if the constantly will install the desired software to test a problem or issue.
Think of it as I may want to purchase another license so I ould have both 1.4 and 2.0 available to me. Currently this is not a possibility.

I dont know about client and recorder but Sagetv itself does allow 1.4 and 2.0 to coexist in diffrent directories.
