Layout of USB-UIRT Question
I'm sure this very basic question has been asked many times before, but I haven't found it on this forum so I'll ask again. If you know of an existing thread on this topic, I'd appreciate it if you would let me know.
I'm building an HTPC to install in my entertainment center with other HT components. I'm considering using a USB-UIRT to control the cable box, A/V receiver, TV etc. Some of these are located above the television, some below, but basically all are next to each other one way or another. As I understand USB-UIRT, it uses IR to control the components and requires a clear line-of-sight to the components to work. My question is, how do the various components "see" the USB-UIRT transmitter/receiver if they are sitting next to each other? To make the system work do I need to locate the transmitter/receiver someplace in the room where all of the components are visible or do I need some type of repeater where the USB-UIRT sends a command and the command is resent back to the components. If the USB-UIRT used RF I'd understand, but need help on how to set up components for IR. Thanks in advance, Jim |

i have the usb-uirt facing the same direction as the components--that is, beaming at my face when I am sitting watching tv--and it seems to work fine by reflecting off thewall. granted, i live in a small manhattan apartment so this may not work in a 20 x 20 room or whatever
you can also get or make an extender that plugs into the jack in the usb unit -- more specifics here: LINK |

Thanks for the suggestions.
My family room is roughly 18' square and the entertainment center is a corner unit so IR signals will hit the walls at an angle. Essentially the signal would need to bouce off of two walls to get back to the components, plus, some of the components are close to the floor while some are above head level, with the television in between. I'm going to have to give this some thought. Extenders sound like the way to go, but the WAF (wife acceptance factor) could be a problem if I have to run wires around. Looks like some trial and error is in order. Thanks for the help, Jim |
