Why is that? Isn't the max of ATSC/QAM 20mbit? X4 = 80mbits < 100mbit Ethernet. I have seen up to 92mbits on a maxed out 100mbit Ethernet connection, so there would even be a little bit ~10% of headroom. Granted, I wouldn't want my SageTV Server to be on a 100mbit connection, since it would also be sending to my extenders. The consolidation of quad tuners into one box would be a good thing. A little bigger than the HDHR3, but smaller than my two combined Gen 1 boxes. Heat would possibly be an issue if not designed correctly though.

[Edit] I stand correcting myself.... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=731457 A rather old discussion, which even mentions SageTV , but it looks like QAM can go up to 40mbits, but stations dont seem to go above 15-20mbits

A perfectly optimized single direction, non flow-controlled stream might be able to squeeze 80mb/s from a 100mb/s connection, but something like media streaming doesn't meet this definition. And no hardware company would build a device like this depending on perfect conditions, and a completely dedicated network for its use - therefore, to make a quad tuner, they would HAVE to put in a gigabit port.

Plus some software (like MythTV; and I think there are add-ons to SageTV to do this) can record from multiple channels on the same QAM carrier at once using just one tuner.. So while SageTV might not max out the connection to a quad-tuner box, MythTV might.

From the specs, it's roughly the same size as an HD300, except that the HD300 is about an inch wider...

Interesting review on the HDHR3, even though they reviewed it using WMC: http://reviewhorizon.com/2011/03/sil...work-tv-tuner/

Ok he listed a con as no cable card support seriously? It isn't a cable card tuner or suppose to tune cable card . Know why you are reviewing before making comments like that sorry off rant.

Codename HDHR3?

/crackly_50s_tv_voice
HDHR3, HDHR3 this is Papa Bear. The chickens have flown the coop, repeat the chickens have flown the coop.

I agree with Plucky, calling con on the no cablecard support is like buying a DVD player and crying that it won't play BDs. Glad Silicon Dust is getting press though.

Also enjoyable that he 'can't get any OTA reception where he is'... yet still feels the need to review a tuner at that location?

HDHR3 and SageTV 6

Well I think my original HDHomeRun might have gone to the great bowling alley in the sky. I bought a HDHR3 and am hoping it will work with sagetv version 6.xxxx

Because I figure at this point, I should not be upgrading or probably cant upgrade anyway (because of google buying out sagetv) to version 7.0

If sagetv version 6.xx cant support the HDHR3...I will just use some other software to record from my OTA HighDef shows...mostly football games during the season is all I really watch during a years time anyway....sooooo with the HDHR3 I can record two games OTA.

Seeing as when it was released, I have a feeling it is not going to be supported in versoin 6.xxxx of sagetv.

thanks

See here for your free upgrade to v7: V7 Upgrades for SageTV for Windows

Though, for what it's worth, I don't think sage interfaces any differently with the HDHR3 than the HDHR, so it SHOULD work with v6.. but really, there's no reason for anyone to NOT be running 7.1.9.256 at this point.

Well I have version 6.6.2 of SageTV for what its worth. I dont know if I can use those sagetv version 7 files, since it sounds like you already had to be on version 7???? hmmmmm

Also, my motherboard died a while ago this year, and finally got around to moving it to a new faster PC. SageTV is up and running again on the new PC, but just the other day I was watching a football game using OTA antenna via sagetv and the HDHomeRun, and the signal went away. I have tried all kinds of stuff, and I can view all the OTA tv stations is on my Samsung HDTV and another Samsung ATSC tuner hooked up completely by itself to a small hdtv.

I decided to buy a HDHR3, I like how it has two internal tuners basically and only one antenna connector

Something seems wrong with the HDHomeRun....

So I will see how it goes with that. I also told silicondust about this problem.

nope, you can upgrade free to 7.

with 6.6 installed and licensed, just upgrade to the trial of 7 (must be latest). Then replace the two files with the link from fuzzy, and you have a fully licensed version 7.

Can someone tell me a bit about SageTV and HDHR? I currently have a Hauppauge 950 USB stick picking up clearQAM non-subscription channels from cable (just for locals, everything else comes from DISH). That tuner requires software encoding which loads my SageTV processor some.

I was wondering if HDHR is strictly a network encoder, so that all the encoding happens elsewhere and it puts no more load on the systems than, say, R5000? I'm considering a dual tuner version (or actually two of the duals - one for Cable and one for OTA for local channels).

Thanks
Jeff

clearQAM does not require encoding. It will capture the digital stream exactly as encoded by the cable co. If you are getting software encoding with the 950 tuner, you are actually tuning analog cable, not qam. The HDHR doesn't have analog capabilities, and will ONLY capture the preencoded ClearQAM(digital cable) or ATSC (digital broadcast) signals.

You might think about picking up a label maker. I label all the power transformer and the devices that have power transformers when the new power transformer first comes into my house. I have a box of several dozen unlabeled old 'mystery' power transformers before I started labeling the transformers. Labeling the cables helps too, such as the Eithernet cables running around the house. The label maker comes in very handy around the house for other things too.
