Poor Sage TV performance - how to fix or workaround?

Sage TV v6.6.2.218
Intel Core2 / WinXP SP3
HD HomeRun tuner

Problem: SageTV is unable to play live HD tv correctly.

The HD HomeRun tuner is configured to play through VLC. When I go into the HomeRun software and play live TV, it plays perfectly, all channels. Not a single burp.

However, when I go into SageTV and try to play live TV, the quality is very poor - choppy / skippy. It's not a light intermittent problem, either. I hardly plays a second or two before it pauses. All channels.

It seems logical that if VLC can easily play all live channels, then the system itself is capable and that the SageTV player should be also. But it's not. It's totally unwatchable.

- how do I configure settings in SageTv so it plays correctly?

- if not possible, is there a way to configure SageTv to play thru a third-party player (such as VLC) and not it's own?

I assume you are watching SageTV on the server PC (not an extender)....

I see you are still in Sage v6 - do you have your recording drive(s) partitioned in 64K blocks?

What about your java heap settings? Search around this forum for info on that.

If not these, then it's probably a video codec issue. I had a much slower machine than yours (previously) and HD Homerun tuners and never had a problem watching on extenders (therefore no codecs needed). What video card, and settings are you using?

I did not know there was a new version. I guess I just assumed SageTV would send out email update notices. If they do, I did not get one. Also, I looked in the app configuration, and could not find a setting to either automatically or manually check for an upgrade. Perhaps I overlooked it, but if it is not there, that would be a nice feature.

I think I'll do an upgrade first to see if that helps. If not, I'll work thru the other things in your post. Thanks again.

My current java heap size is 61/94/400.

I run a single tuner on the HD homerun

Installed the java heap settings app available here, set it to 512 and it is better. Works 97%, but detect slight jumpiness on fast moving scenes.
