My 2 cents: I bought a big case that could hold 10 drives. I use 2 of the drives for recordings (not backed up in any way), 4 of the drives to hold things I don't want to lose, and 4 drives to backup. I don't use RAID mirroring because if I accidentally erase something I don't want the error propagated to my backup copy.
In the past I used UnRaid and NASLite. Both are excellent products but in the end just added another computer to maintain and network congestion.
