Are there any features in V7 that can only be used with Windows 7? I was gonna do a clean upgrade to W7 when I uprade to V7, but before I go through the hassle , I wanted to know i actually gain anything in V7 from a newer OS..

From my personal experience, the whole thing just works better. From the menu operation to the playback to the overall stability, V7 and Win7 are just better than any previous combination I've ever used.
Oddly enough, V6 (several builds) ran better in Vista for me than it did with Win7, but I suppose that's no real suprise since they (Sage) did not support Win7 previously. I'd say its more than worth it but, if you never had any problems before, you might not come to the same conclusion |

I have been running v6, and v7 all they way through beta on win xp SP3 32 bit.
I have the opportunity to upgrade to a fresh install of win 7 utlimate 64 bit, and am also wondering if this is worth it. what Im wondering is: 1) What benefits do i get other than those loosley listed above 2) sage isn't 64 bit, so i don't think ill gain anything there 3) comskip isn't 64 bit from what i know so i won't gain anything there either 4) .... if you all convince me that win 7 is truly the way to go and I decide to reinstall my sage server with win 7 ultimate, is there a good way to migrate everything from my currently install system? just backup the wiz.bin and start fresh? Thanks, Pix64 |

Any 32-bit program will run fine on 64-bit Win7. So those programs won't be able access more than 2GB of RAM for each process. The advantage of 64-bit is that you can have more than 3GB of physical RAM. Even if you're not running 64-bit programs this means that if you have your server doing a lot of different tasks you can have a lot more running without the need to swap to the hard drive as often. For example, the new ShowAnalyzer is a memory hog. I've seen a single instance use up to 250MB of memory, half as much as my SageTV service. Right now I have 2GB of RAM so I really can't have too many instances of ShowAnalyzer running without bumping into memory limitations.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you're using firewire for recording or channel changing you cannot use a 64-bit Windows as there are no 64-bit drivers available for STB's. In this case you would have to stay with 32-bit.

also, out of the box win7 has more codecs so, in turn, Sage will inherently play more media without having to search out codecs.
It is also more stable than the last two predecessors as well as more secure (for the time being anyway). for me, win7 from XP was like going from win3.1 to win95. It is just a much cleaner experience. By the way, if you can deal with the limitations of Win7 home, there is a deal for $150 where you can get a 3 pack of licenses; it's called Win7 home premium family pack.

If you use your server for playback of video, then absolutely you should go Windows 7. If your server isn't used for video playback, then the decision becomes a bit more difficult. I ended up going Windows 7 on my server when I upgraded the hardware for the following reasons:
1. A new OS that wasn't 7 years old and would have support by Microsoft in the future 2. More secure (at least on paper) 3. Newer hardware would be guaranteed to have a Windows 7 driver but not necessarily Windows XP A few downsides to Windows 7: 1. UAC - I always turn it off before I begin to install anything 2. Memory use - While it isn't as bad as Vista, it still uses more than Windows Xp so be careful if you have less than 2GB of RAM 3. Older hardware is not necessarily compatible (especially if you go 64bit). With that said, if you have a windows xp machine and it is working fine with all of your hardware then there isn't any reason to upgrade to windows 7 just because you are installing Sage V7.

Does anyone have tips on the best way to migrate sage 7 install on xp to a new sage 7 install on windows 7?
i use BMT SMM/MyMovies webui mobile web ui i assume i will need to copy my wiz.bin, and potentially some properties files, but what im really concerned with is a good way to copy the mymovies database and not lose everything, as well as not losing recordings/favorites... ~Pix64 |
