$#*! My Dad Says or $..! My Dad Says

I just noticed that even after the latest BMT/Phoenix upgrade for TVDB lookups, under my TV recordings, I see the recordings called: $..! My Dad Says still dont get fanart automatically or manually.

I was wondering why it wasnt getting fanart; so, I did a search on google for $..! My Dad Says + TVDB. Google's first entry pointed to TBDB's webpage under the name: $#*! My Dad Says

Is there any way to use some kind of logic for Phoenix to be smart enough to find realize that those two are a close enough match to use without manually entering explicitly to ignore: $..! Maybe if Google can figure it out, so can Phoenix?

Anyway, maybe by adding logic for this would also help future TV shows with a weird string of characters in the name.

BTW: Sean I really feel I need to say to say this, (mainly because I never really had the chance to say this before and have to get this off my chest) thanks so much for all your hard work, I just saw some of the new features you added in the plugin descriptions, I can't even begin to comprehend how much work you put into into all your work to bring BMT to where it is today alont with all the other developer's time that work on Phoenix! On top of that you still find time to answer all questions with very helpful suggestions and have this very cool, classy way of replying to all kinds of comments. This is in addition to having a life outside of BMT. Since I can't donate for all your effort, hopefully just saying a thank you may helpfully mean something if you know it's sincerely meant.

Google's budget for designing fuzzy logic searching algorithms is a little bigger than mine Seriously though, The reason is not actually Phoenix, it's TMDB. Phoenix does have very good fuzzy matching abilities, and it would actually match those 2 IF TVDB had returned any results. The probelm, and you can see this yourself if you search for #..* My Dad Days in TVDB, is that TVDB doesn't return ANY results for that query. So, TVDB needs to update their searching algorithm

The special characters doesn't appear to be a problem. If the correct sequence of special characters are entered, then TVDB appears to return results.

BUT, something that you can try, for this show, is adding a matcher to the MediaTitles.xml to force a match. It would be something like...

Code:
<match>
	<regex>[\\/].*My Dad Says</regex>
		<title>$#*! My Dad Says</title>
		<metadata type="tv" name="tvdb">164951</metadata>
	</match>

Thanks is enough. I get many requests for people to donate, etc. But, this is hobby project. I don't want people to feel jaded because they made a donation, and then I decided to drop a feature that was important to them (like Sage6 support, or command line processing, etc). This way, I can work on this, and if I ever choose to stop working on this, then I can do so without guilt. I'm not saying that I'll never accept a donation, but not at this time Also, much of this project is now a part of Phoenix, so it wouldn't be fair for me to accept such donations when there are others members in the Phoenix Initiative who contribute in other valuable ways.

Sean, I tried what you suggested, I'm more of a wildcard person than regex, but from what I can tell it looks comparable to the sample MediaTitles.xml file. Are you sure it's not something else that's the problem? Anyway, no worries.. as long as the issue is something that's very specific with just that TV show Title on TVDB.

I'll try to test it tonight. I add all sorts of weird videos to my test collection. This one seems to fit the bill.

I wonder if the Google search could be leveraged to be a 'helper' for the tmdb lookup. I know I have routine problems with punctuated shows. I wonder if the tvdb search returns zero results, if you could then perform a Google search for '$..! My Dad Says site:thetvdb.com' and grab the series ID's from the first result URL. Then, get the info page for that series, and re-enter the tvdb search with that exact title. (doing this process manually always gets me what i need - just needs to be rolled into the automatic process).

Michael, could I get a filename of a video that is failing. I just tried "$..! My Dad Says S01E01.avi" and it worked.. so there must be more going on here than just $.. in the title. I'd like to try using one of your filenames.

I really hate parsing unstructured html results... but in this case, it might actually work... I may do some testing to see how it goes.

Google may actually have some sort of API for the searches that could be used to get a cleaner result. (all you really need from the result is the ?SeasonID=xxxxxx in the URL). You should then be abl to get the further info from the tvdb api calls. Shouldn't really have to parse out any HTML pages, I dont' think...

I agree.. i think I can pull out the series id using a simple regex... but before i go down this path, I'd really like to understand why it's failing for some people. In my test area, $..! My Dad Says worked fine.

Sean, I'm not sure what happened, but I just checked today and noticed that I have fanart and metadata for this show. I'm not using a MediaTitles.xml file. Im pretty sure I rescanned imports many times. It just started working using the name $#*! My Dad Says

Very cool. Its amazing how BMT just recovers from these things; unless something changed on the website...

Thanks for looking into it Sean!

When I tested those shows myself, both the $..! and $#*! versions worked without any changes... so I did nothing I find the TVDB site flaky at times... I think they get a lot of traffic, since they are the only open place to get this information today.
