Sounds like you've got two things to overcome. first of all, there's the actual ripping to deal with. this, is pretty much never going to be able to work automatically, as there's no way to know how a given disk is laid out. I'd recommend using something that will get you do just individual movie files for each episode (as opposed to the separate video_ts you seem to be doing now with dvdshrink). MakeMKV would be my personal preference, as the MKV container can hold just about anything you throw at it.

Second, is the processing of the video for your rips. This should be relatively automatable, as you will likely end up with a single AVS script to be used for all your anime.

Yup, you're right. Ripping isn't really a big deal, I know how to do that and there's reasonable tools to do that with. Now MakeMKV doesn't seem to be one, I've not found a way to get it to cut a DVD apart. It works fine when each episode is a title, but not if all episodes are one title.

I've actually found I can use StaxRip to encode/cut in one step, so that's a "step' in the right direction. Unfortuntately the subtitle timing is still horked up.

The big issue is all the automated tools I've found seem unable to properly cut subs and keep them in sync.

I think I found my answer, and in a rather surprising place. MKV Merge apparently has the ability to split MKVs, even with H.264 video and DD audio. So what I did was encode the whole DVD/Title to a single MKV like you normally would with a movie. Then you open it up with MKVMerge Gui, and add the --split duration:hh:mm:ss command line option, then when you mux it splits out files that are that long. So I tried this with one of my DVDs encoded it at 320x240 (for a test, man it's nice encoding at >100fps ) and then ran the file through MKV Merge with the --split duration:00:24:41 (as that's how long the episodes are), and whala, out the other side are 4 files, cut in the right spots and with the subs in sync. I did lose my chapters in the process but I'm not sure encoded those in right in the first place. And even if I did lose my chapters, I might be able to live with that to have the net result.

What problems did you find? I use MKV with embedded subtitles and have never had problem with them.

Stranger it looks like the latest release of mymovies actually allows marking discs as tv series and pointing chapters to episodes. Sounds like a way to finally make full tv rips usable since you can directly jump to chapters in sagetv. I haven't had a chance to try it yet bit I'd you read the last two beta releases it talks about it. I always wanted something like this so I could just rip native and automatic. Should be able to finally do individual episode/season selection from a full rip. Now just need to find the time to test the feature and code it I to smm

Yeah I will too. I always wanted a way to do this but was too lazy to code my own method. if it works like I read it to I can finally start ripping my tv shows from DVD. I never wanted to spend the time ripping out individual episodes.

Hm, that's going to be a bit of a pain, you've got to stick the DVD in a drive for it to get the chapter list, it doesn't appear able to pull it from the hard drive rip.

Of course beyond that, it doesn't appear to work with Blu-ray yet either. It "scans" the disk but doesn't seem to find any titles/chapters.

Does it not work if you full ripped from within mymovies? Not likeing what I am hearing, but not suprised either it is still early beta so hopefully blurays are on the list to do.

Doesn't matter, you have to pop the original disc in to scan for chapters apparently. I did post a question on the MyMovies forums, we'll see if a noob over there gets a response

A combo of DVDFab to rip and Handbrake to encode to MKV works for me. AnyDVD is needed for those rare disc that DVDFab fails on. DVDFab can actually rip to MKV directly, but it exports the subtitle as a separate file. So I use Handbrake to encode to MKV instead because I prefer the subtitle in the MKV container.

I like the new Handbrake (v0.9.5), it doesn't pop up the command prompt anymore. And the taskbar icon shows the encoding progress bar, pretty neat. Why don't more softwares do this?

A lot of programs are starting to support that. MeGUI, mkvmerge GUI, and ImgBurn all support taskbar progress in Windows 7.
