Explorer is crashing, very often

For a while now, Explorer has been crashing often on my MC.

I have already:
  • Upgraded to XP SP3
  • run spyware checker
  • run malware checker
  • run virus checker

The problem seems to occur (empirically) when I try to move a video file (AVI?) to another location, or sometimes, when playback begins. The playback works perfectly, but explorer crashes.

I usually use smplayer as my media player and I thought maybe it was doing the dirty, so I switched all my associations and things to VLC, but the problem persisted.

It's annoying more than bad, as explorer reasserts itself, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it, and fix it.

System: Win XP SP3, SageTV

At a guess one of the codecs are passing bad data or the file has bad data in it, and when exploder is creating thumbnails, it's crashing. Had the same problem with CoreAVC and Windoze 7.

See this tread on how to disable thumbnail generation and other fixes:
http://forum.corecodec.com/viewtopic...p=13211#p13211

I just disabled thumbnails, as I can't stand them anyway.

I had a problem similar to this about a year or two ago (Win XP Home) and it ended up being a driver conflict. Upgrading to all of the most recent drivers for my PC resolved the issue.

Are you getting a BlueScreen error before it crashes? If so, what's the error?

Are there any errors in the event logs (either the system or application logs)?

I'm wondering if it's a RAM issue, or a driver issue?
