I can't speak to some of the mentioned editing tools, but I do use VideoReDo and Final Cut Pro. There is very little overlap in the domains of where I would use each. And they each offer a different poison.
The biggest plus for VRD is most of the editing result does not require decoding and recompression. But their encoders aren't great and even on MPEG-2 one can often notice a degradation in video quality at the edit points. With H.264 it is still far too problematic for any of my editing needs. FCP is a wonderful tool, but for most delivery formats available to consumers, whether they be recorded from distribution sources or camcorders, one has to render the video first into something FCP can edit. This isn't always as easy as it should be, because Apple's codecs often require tweaking to handle some of these video sources correctly. The real problem is the entire video must be recompressed after the editing is complete. One can minimize the quality loss, but a second generation compress will never be the same as the first generation. |

I am talking as someone who edits video professionally & can assure you that with all of the above we can edit MPEG2 files natively but must transcode H.264 MPEG4 files to another CODEC before editing. Sure you can do simple trimming & assembly editing with native files at a pinch but if you are doing anything more complex then you will first transcode to something like ProRes or Cineform Neoscene. However even if the transcoded H.264 files are easier to edit they still don't stand up as well to colour grading, using multiple streams or compex effect as if you had started off with a high bit rate 4:2:2 MPEG2 file.
