pausing fixes jerky video???

First time poster. Im coming from beyond tv because of the hauppauge hd pvr, on to my problem. Ive noticed when I change to a channel the video is jerky, some times will smooth out most time not. I noticed when I pause for just 5 seconds or even less the jerky video goes away. Im assuming this is because of the recording and displaying at the same time. Is there a setting to buffer the recording before displaying the show, or something else. I looked and cant find a setting. Is this something that might be addressed in version 7. I cant believe how much better the hd-pvr works with sagetv. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

2.8 quad
4 gb memory
win 7 32 bit
unraid server, switching to server and to on board hard drive doesnt change jerky video.

I was going to guess poor hard drive performance until you mentioned live vs networked recording doesn't change anything. My next guess or place to look into would be updated video card drivers and also video codecs and renderers.

I had a similar experience with the Avatar blu ray, about half way through the movie it would get choppy and start to skip, pausing a few seconds cleared it up. I finally traced that down to my WHS was at nearly full capacity and had one older slower drive in the pool. I upgraded my controller card, added a few drivers, removed the old one and all my blu rays have been silky smooth since.

There are plenty of settings to work with to get flawless channel changes ont he HD-PVR. They involve adding a delay from tuning to sage recording the stream. On mine, there is a 3-5 second pause when changing channels to get flawless channel changes. The biggest problem occurs when the input to the HD-PVR changes i.e. - 720p to 1080i to 480p tp 480i. You can lock down the output resolution of yoru STB to minimize this delay, but what is the fun in that?

Here's the line I change to 3000 (in msecs). The XXX is your tuner number. Make sure you shutdown sageTV before changing the .properties file.

mmc/encoders/<###>/delay_to_wait_after_tuning=3000

I'd suggest trying smaller/larger numbers. To definitively test the setting, find a channel that is 720p and one that is 1080i. Change channel back and forth 2-3x and look for the studdering. This change in resolution seems to take the longest.

Also, I'd suggest using the latest driver 1.5.7.0 with SageTV 7. If you are NOT on SageTV v7, I'd suggest the older 1.5.301 driver. PM me if you need that one.

Good luck.....and I'd like to point otu that the HD-PVR is definitely more stable in SageTV v7, so that alone is worth the upgrade cost to me.

Sounds good. As I use HD200s for 99% of my viewing, i do remember having to do something to get SageTV to use the decoder in Win7, but forget what. "Native Patch" sounds somewhat familiar.....

Cheers...

If you are buying a new full license for SageTV now, you do not need to buy the v7 upgrade.

If you are referring to a native patch file for v6, that is not needed for a v7 installation.

Also, you may want to try changing these properties to higher millisecond values if pausing for a few seconds helps playback of live recordings:

videoframe/local_encoding_to_playback_delay=0
videoframe/time_behind_live_to_disable_skip_forward=4000
