SageTV Remote Control with HTPC
Now that I have a HTPC, I need a remote control. I have gotten used to using the SageTV Remote Control that came with the HD200 extender. Can I use this remote with my HTPC running SageTV?
If so, what will I need for an IR receiver and software? Thanks, John

Easy answer. Get a USB-UIRT and you can learn the commands from any remote. USB-UIRT is supported in SageTV.

You can find a MCE remote for about $25. I would also get LM Remote as well. It will allow you to easily control Sage exactly the way you want. You will also be able to use the MCE remote to launch and control any other apps as well.
Sage has built in support for the MCE remote but there will be some annoyances without software LM Remote, EventGhost, Girder since it was designed to only work with MCE. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-003-_-Product I actually just use the MCE receiver and Harmony 520\510 Universal remotes with my setup. |

IMO it's well worth the $50 even if you don't use the transmitter functionality. It's very simply to setup and just plain works as opposed to the headaches some other solutions can present.

Yes it will work. However if you can try to find an OEM MCE remote (like an HP one)

Reading my post again I am not sure I didn't confuse you. LM Remote, EventGhost, and Girder are all applications that allow you to enhance the functionality of the remote. They will work with a USB-UIRT or the MCE Remote. Only one will be used and none is really required for basic functionality. LM Remote (Recommended) - about $20 for full functionality version but you can use the free version as well but it will be harder to setup initially. Event Ghost: Free but not as easy to use and not quite as capable. You can give it a try and it will only cost you your time. http://www.eventghost.org/ Girder: Commercial Software - about $50. I have not used it in awile but I abandoned it in favor of EventGhost and then eventually LM Remote. Can't recommend it. http://www.promixis.com/girder.php I have two USB-UIRTs and they work well. If you get one you will still need a Universal remote to work with it. To me the easiest setup is a MCE remote even with the USB-UIRT. I no longer use the USB-UIRT as a IR Blaster and would not spend the extra money over the MCE options if you only need to control the Sage UI. |
