Halt Detected in Recording (solution)

I have been getting lots and lots of "Halt Detected" errors for quite some time. Very often it would happen multiple times during a single show, resulting in many different files for a single recording.

While waiting for support to reply to my request for help, I discovered a setting in the sage.properties file named "seeker/duration_for_halt_detection" with a value of 60000 (one minute). Just for kicks I increased that value to 600000 (ten minutes). I have gotten no "Halt Detected" errors since making that change.

I let support know what I did and this was their response:

Quote:
SageTV keep checking recording file size, if it stop growing for a period
time (duration_for_halt_detection), SageTV thinks the tuner has a trouble.
In your case I think window 7 doesn't update file size change in certain
time for some reason, that makes the halt trouble, it's no problem you
change duration_for_halt_detection longer in this case.
Hope this helps someone.

But this seems to be an issue specifically related to Windows 7. Just keep that in mind....

I'm just hoping it will slow down the error popups.

Ahh, gotcha.

I'd like to hear if it works out.

well... i'm willing to give this a try and see what the result is even though I'm on WHS... it potentially make sence since most of the lockups happen during the night when my WHS is doing backups and other major disk activities.

But is there an actual pause in the stream being recorded?

Your change would prevent the message but not fix the problem, if it really occurs.

I get lots of these. They don't seem to hurt anything other than I do in fact get a black screen for a couple of minutes in the recordings. The thing is, I know it's not the card because I have two capture cards and they always both get the message at exactly the same time - I've never gotten the message on one and not the other. I've only once had a situation where apparently Sage lost contact with the cards completely and the status went red in Sage and I had to reboot. The cards are ATI wonder's that I got from Woot. I've been thinking about updating the driver but since the messages don't seem to hurt anything I'm hesitant to taunt the DVR gods.

One positive out of this change... the popup window doesn't show up every minute pissing off my wife... of course I still get pissed when I see the stupid red alert! Happened right at midnight. It's replying itself just like last time and I am not looking forward to battleing with it for 1-2 months til the HD-PVR gods let it work again. I may just go back to SD for the time being.

I use Sage TV for Windows home server with a HD extender. I've been seeing these halt detected messages for a long long time and I just delete them because they have been cosmetic errors. All recordings have been fine. I'll try out this fix but probably experiment with settings in the range of 2 to 5 minutes. Thanks.
