Playback of 1080p

Hi,
I would like to play a 1080p h.264 mkv file, on a moderately powerful HTPC with an nvidia graphics card. It is still stuttering pretty badly, so I would love any advise on tweaks to improve that! Could someone perhaps get me going with a hint or two? :-)
Best regards,
Mark

What OS are you running? You need a codec that supports hardware acceleration. Win7 has a VERY good decoder built in.

Sorry, XP 32bit. Not much built in at all, do you have any suggestions for the video codec?

Depending on your nvidia card the only way you can get hardware accelerated H.264 playback is from CoreAVC. H.264 acceleration is implemented in DXVA2 which is only available in Windows Vista or 7. CoreAVC's acceleration is dependent on CUDA. Any nvidia card which is CUDA capable will support hardware acceleration with CoreAVC.

Not entirely true, there are plenty of hardware accelleration capable codecs on winxp that can decode H.264. DXVA2 added more extensive HA support, but a good portino of the process can be accellerated in DXVA1 (WinXP). ArcSoft and Cyberlink both make pretty decent H.264 codecs, though getting them to work outside their programs takes some 'work'.
