FW channel changing on a 64 bit OS... Sort of
I am currently upgrading my sage server. I would really like to install a 64 bit OS, but I don't like channel changing via IR because its slow, and I had issues where it would sometimes not get all of the channel numbers.
I am currently exploring installing VMWares ESXi (http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi) on my server and running 2 guest OSes on the machine. I would run a copy of 32 bit XP that would do the channel changing, and Server 2008 x64 to run sage and everything else I need. Unlike most Virtual Hypervisors, ESXi 4.0 allows you to use what they call VMDirectPath I/O to give one guest OS dedicated access to some of your hardware. This solves the problem of getting the guest os access to the firewire port. What I am lacking now is a fast way of getting the command from my virtual 2008 server to my virtual XP channel changer. I am looking at using a command line program on my server to remotely execute the channel command on my xp machine I have found a couple of solutions but they are slow... on the order of 2 to 10 seconds. So far I have tried PSExec ( around 10 seconds) and MobaSSH (around 2 seconds) Any suggestions for something faster? Thanks Kent |
