Sounds like you jsut let your kid complain too much. So if he misbehaves, tell hi mhe's losing internet AND tv... Whats the point of taking away the computer, if he can just watch tv instead?

Look to this list when picking out a router. WRT310 or 600 would probably work (double check that the version matches the compatibility list).

I wouldn't fixate on dual band. 2.4ghz punches through walls better than 5ghz. And with DDWRT, you can turn up the volume.

That said, I would also be in the "No TV + No Internet = productive motivation" camp.

You have to be careful. DD-WRT's support for dual band routers isn't great. Often the 5Ghz band won't work. That said, I think they have the WRT320N working, based on DD-WRT forum posts.

I use a Netgear FVS336G as my router and a GS716 "smart" switch to feed the house. They're expensive new, but I found some used/refurbished models for much less on eBay. They'd both do what you want, and with the switch you can even do things like replicate data from one port to another and use Wireshark to monitor what your kids are doing. I've been thinking of a lockable cabinet, but haven't gone that route yet. Multiple layers is a good thing in my view.

Personally, I don't let my kids have computers in their rooms and am sooo unfair for doing so, (and no, you can't have a mobile phone--what am I thinking??)

I'm sure the battles will intensify over the next few years, but I'm already getting grey hairs, so might as well bring 'em on . On the other hand, challenging your kids and seeing them figure things out on their own is pretty darn cool.

I don't know your son, but just on this thread and my background in security, *my* thought is to maybe try to cultivate his talent and interest in a more controlled way. Maybe see if someone at the local precinct's computer crime unit would like to be a mentor, or if there's an ISSA chapter in the area bring it up with them. Being a "white hat" is *much* more challenging and something that unfortunately won't disappear anytime soon as a good career path. And while they may not listen to you over these years, they might from someone else...

There isn't a space above the ceiling. In all rooms it is roof-insulation-ceiling. The last thing I want to do is open up the ceiling in several areas to pass through the joists.

I ended up getting the WRT320N and installed DD-WRT on it. I haven't finished configuring it yet, but it looks like I'll have to use iptables to add or remove MAC addresses from the white list. I'd prefer it to be easier so my wife can handle it, but I'll probably just create scripts she can run through ssh to the router.

zywall 2+

My zywall 2+ will do it, and much more. A great little box. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...XEL-_-33181021

Also, you could investigate one of the open source router software packages - tomato or dd-wrt. Both install on a number of cheap, commodity routers and add much more sophisticated software. And, they're both free.
