2.0.16 Today?

Well, I'm bored now. So since it is exactly 2 weeks since 2.0.15 was released, I thought I would start the annoying thread speculating whether 2.0.16 would be released today.

Any takers?

Jason

P.S. I know, I know. It will be released when it is ready.

hopefully Friday during the week is not good for me to do another install
also I am trying to wait until the official release and do a clean install of Sage so I hope it is official release
Finally if they have versions they are not releasing because they are trying to get the official (non beta ) product out
let us test them, please

It will be interesting to see whether they change the beta file naming convention, since the files were found before they were 'officially' released last time...

I may have "accidentally" typed in a theoretical url for a .16 version a time or two.

I was told that one of my recent bugs has been fixed for version "2.0.16"... so whether it is an "rc" version or not, it still has the same version number system internally. As for the file being online... after that last episode of it being found early, I'll have to admit to checking on it too.

I was actually hoping for Beta 3.0.01 since that is bound to be better than any old version 2--the higher the number, the better, right?

I bought 1.4 so I could beta test 2.0 since was having the 100% CPU problem with multiple recorders. (Before that I was just using the trial). I bought it about 2 weeks ago.

Will they give us a break on the 2.0 price as an upgrade? I really only bought 1.4 for the beta.

2.0 is a free upgrade for 1.4 users.

Yes, that is something they updated on the SageTV FAQ page (not forum FAQ):

Quote:
What is the upgrade policy for all SageTV applications?
We will do our best to provide upgrades at no additional cost to our current customers.
The beta info page says:
Quote:
There will also be no charge to upgrade to version 2 if you are a current registered customer of SageTV.
I thought there was a forum posting from Frey recently that commented that they reserved the right to change the upgrade policy in the future. Personally, I don't see how anyone could stay in business with perpetual free upgrades... unless you change the product name and call it a 'new' product requiring a new purchase.

Well, they kill you buy charging for every "part" of the system. For a decent sized system with a server, few clients, few records, its not hard to spend $150+. Quite a bit more than the standard rate, but you can't win them all.

Well I think at this point they have to provide a free upgrade to 2.0 at least since they have been advertising this for so long and many users purchased 1.4 just because 2.0 was a free upgrade.

But I do agree that after 2.0 the next release should be a pay upgrade.

Yup... and the beta page still says that. I didn't want to leave you with the impression that I was suggesting that one might/should change.

To clarify why we changed the wording on the website is so that we reserve the right to charge for an upgrade if it adds functionality that causes us to incur additional licensing fees (i.e. Divx or CDDB). Our goal for the future is to still do our best to provide upgrades at no charge like we are doing for version 2.0.

Well, we certainly understand licensing costs, etc (those of us in IT, at least!), and we definitely appreciate your attempt to keep costs low for those of us hanging in here with you. Keep up the great work, guys. Can't wait for the final V2!!!

That should be fine for any new purchases, but anyone who has already purchased the product HAS already purchased a product with unlimited upgrades and it would be wrong to then charge someone for something they have already purchased.

Dan,
I am with you. I am surprised that you are not charging for the V2.0. You have a great product and I am very happy with it.

Nope. Disagree.

If they add completely new functionality later that incurs licensing costs on their end, then they HAVE to charge customers. It is unreasonable to expect lifetime upgrades, regardless of what is added, for the cost of this type of product.

If they were smart though, they would modularize those 'extras' so that those that do not want them do not have to pay for them.

Jason
