Subtitles

I have always been a little confused about subtitles. Recently i ripped and then watched the Da Vinci Code from my WHS / Sage server via the HD200 in extender mode, and there were many sections where they were speaking French and/or Italian. Using the options button I enabled what i thought was subtitles. This was more like closed captioned where the subtitles came up in english but for all dialogue including english. Is there a way to get subtitles only for the non-english? Is there a setting for this. Does it have to do with how the movie was originally ripped? (usually use anydvdhd).

Appreciate any info on this.

thanks..

Sage should be able to handle forced subtitles like this, however, it depends on how you rip the disc if these are actually kept. If you just did a 1:1 DVD -> Folder then it should have worked properly, but if you ripped it into a container like mkv or m2ts then its possible the forced subtitles were lost.

its ripped as dvd - video.ts and vob files. can you tell from the file structure if subtitles are there? So you're saying that if ripped properly it should show the subtitles automatically, no setting? then what is the setting when you hit the option button on the remote?

thanks
