SageTV on WHS
Hello,
I recently downloaded the trial sagetv server for WHS and am not sure if it is functioning or not. I see the add-on installed but when i got to start/programs/sagetv/stagetv it comes up with an error ntvdm.exe encountered a hard error What does this error mean? How do i know if it is functioning? The main thing i want to do with this is record shows using my whs box to be able to watch them on my ps3 so i would like to be able to schedule the recordings and stuff from whs if possible. My whs is on all the time so would be ideal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Last edited by bline22; 11-21-2009 at 08:12 AM. |

Sorry, I can not help with the error you are seeing, I have not seen that one before.
However, you and can ckeck to see if it is running on the SageTV Service tab of the Windows Home Server Console. Or, you can go to Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Services and look down the list and see if the status of SageTV is Started. Hope this helps.

What tuners do you have installed? That is an exe that is used in 1 16bit process virtual machine. What else are you running on WHS? Are you up to date with power packs and updates on WHS? From the WHS console does it say the SageTV add is installed and running?

You can't schedule a recording from inside the WHS console, and I don't know if the WHS version comes with the normal Sage TV interface that you could run through a remote desktop or connected monitor.
The WHS console just lets you start and stop the service, check it's status, and add licenses. You'll need to use another computer running Placeshifter to actually set up the service and schedule/manage recordings.

The WHS version is intended to be configured via a client - a placeshifter client license is included so you should be able to run the placeshifter on any computer on your network and it should identify the server and allow you to connect. |

you can also install the advanced admin console add-in for WHS which will allow you to view the desktop on the whs. Then you could launch SageTV like you normally would on a different OS other than WHS and then configure it.

I've read that WHS is based on a WIn2K kernel. So the admin console add-on would make it akin to having a Win2000 Server?

I believe WHS is a scaled down version of Windows 2003 Server, so you won't get any of the really advanced server features. The Advanced Admin Console addon just gives you access to some stuff (start menu, control panel, windows explorer, command prompt, etc) in the remote Windows Home Server Console app that you would normally only have access to while logged into the WHS desktop locally or via RDP.

I installed the WHS version and the [Buy] button just led to the store showing a purchase page for STVS .. With no specific store item for the WHS version, I just went ahead and ordered some STVBSTP (HD200 + SageTV MC bundle) in order to register the WHS install -- which it did. I have 1 placeshifter license from years ago that I registered with the WHS SageTV, any concurrent placeshifter connections though are in trial mode. I see in the SageTV WHS tab: "SageTV Service Licensed + SageTV Placeshifter / Extender Licenses (Trial Available)" "SageTV is delivered with one (1) SageTV Placeshifter / Extender license. Using the field below, you may register SageTV Placeshifter / Extender licenses that you have purchased." I have used RDP to the server and ran the SageTV.exe UI from there.. Is it that I have spent the gratis client/placeshiter license that way.. IIRC that is considered the/an included license for SageTV. If possible, I'd prefer to unregister the UI on the WHS and have a gratis Placeshifter license instead since I am presently having some problems with the Client on my two Vista x64 + Radeon HD4890 workstations and my WHS / tuner machine. My receipt contained the 5 keys I paid for but mentioned nothing about any included Placeshifter/Extender license rights. |

Just download and install Placeshifter on a PC other than the WHS server and use it.
