HDHR power supply died... again
I posted on the SiliconDust forum but I figure I ought to post here to give people a heads-up... my "second generation" power supply for my HDHR died last night.
I have 2 HDHRs... both had the "original" power supplies. When they started dying, I filed for replacement and received them from SiliconDust. One of my two originals had died at that point; I kept the "still alive" one for emergency use. That came in handy last night... but it's only a matter of time until it fries. Keep an eye on your HDHRs. If you notice that (when not in use), the power light is "breathing" and no other lights are on... it's your power supply. I filed a ticket on SD's site.

My second power supply died last week. Silicondust took care of me by shipping me a replacement power supply and an envelope to return the defective supply. I am really thinking about going with a different supply that can supply 3+amps. I don't know if I trust Silicondust's supplies any more. The good news is my "halt detected" errors have now gone away.

On my HDHR I've been having a lot of symbol error problems on Tuner 1. Contacted Silicon Image today and they are blaming the power supply. I got a replacement a long time ago for it but I hadn't actually been using it. I figured it would be faster to order a compatible power supply from Digikey and keep their replacement as a backup. Which I did. When I recently started having problems with my HDHR the second thing I did after ruling out signal problems was to swap out the power supply. Still having the problems and that power supply has only been in service for about a month, if that.
I'm kind of curious if there are any capacitors inside the HDHR itself that could be the cause of my ills. I have several power supplies that can work with my HDHR. One of them came from an old D-link wireless access point I once had. We'll see though. They gave me the option of ordering another one from them for $15. I might go the route of Digikey again but order one that can supply a couple amps more. It's just entirely possible that they under spec'd their power supplies. Or I could just have half my HDHR going bad.

Hi guys,
Failure rate on the 2nd-gen power adapters (shipping since 2008) is around 0.1%. If you are seeing a problem please file a trouble ticket and Silicondust support will help. electronics4lif - We recommend using the Silicondust supplied replacement power adapter. The current draw of a 1st gen HDHomeRun is a little under 1.5A running a full function stress test. Taddeusz - If you are continuing to see a problem after replacing the SW20 model power adapter then it points to a signal quality or hardware problem. Please send me a PM with the trouble ticket number and I will review. Nick - Silicondust |

What's the model number of the power supply you bought from digikey that works with the HDHR?
I'm asking because I'd like to get some spares, and want to make sure they have the correct Amps, Volts, polorization, and plug size/type. |

I don't remember the Digikey part. It's a CUI EPAS-101W-05 5V 2A power supply.

Thanks for the reply.
I've been thinking about it, and I bet that any brick with 5V and 2A DC output will probably work. If the connector doesn't match, there's always the option of cutting the connector off the old one and using soldier and heat shrink tubing. |
