AverTV HD DVR

It would be nice to get a few more details. Like does this do all the work on-board or does it use the CPU? I like the option of recording HD as MPEG2 for Comskip purposes. But if this thing bogs down my CPU it would be a deal killer (and if it goes for ~ $100 I really doubt it has much HP).

It's worth watching, for sure. Didn't look at the manual. I have an allergy to them

Info
Looking at the user manual it says
Note: To preview HDMI source with HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) encryption, a copy-protection scheme of HDMI specification, your HDMI display devices must be HDCP compliant. If your display devices do not support HDCP, a message box will appear (shown as following): and Please note that HDMI contents with HDCP encryption cannot be recorded. I don't know much about the Black Magic card, but I think it has similar restrictions. |

Considering that this can record via component, wouldn't this be akin to a HD-PVR only as a card, rather than an external USB device? It 'may' finally give an alternative to those that have issues with the Hauppauge devices.

The only real advantage this card would have over the Black Magic card would obviously be price. Too bad it's not hardware based. And too bad the spurs engine encoding card is so pricey and doesn't seem to currently play nice with any encoding engine rather than tmpec enc IIRC.

The manual for the software also talks about other TV Tuner cards so it is difficult to tell just what recording formats are supported for this card. It would be interesting if it captured mpeg2 at full HD resolution. The press release touts low res h.264 for portable devices but I can't find anything definitive on something else. I suspect it might be awhile before Sage added support in any event.
Not sure the HDMI would be useful if it blocked HDCP encrypted content. I suspect everything on my DirecTV receiver is encrypted but I really don't know for sure. Available right now on their website for $99. |
